Win 7 Pro build 7601 not genuine

Went to use my home PC tonight (it had been on for most of the day). It has the black backgoround with "Build 7601 Windows not genuine" in the bottom right hand corner.

PC is about 5 x years old and was running windows XP until start of this year when I bought a copy of win 7 Pro. Everything fine until tonight, PC seems to have done some optional updates today for

nVidia Display
Realtek PCIe
Logitech webcam

I tried activate over the automated phone call but that didn't work

This key is blocked from activation or validation. It looks like it is an MSDN key. Did you buy Win 7 from retail store? or get it through a MSDN partnership?

Thanks for the replies, since posting this I went on Chat with Microsoft and they told me the same thing MSDN copy.

"It seems you are running a license intended for a particular channel which is MSDN or for Software development, and these are not valid for resale and use by anyone other than the owner of the MSDN subscription; hence if Microsoft discovered this unauthorized activity a permanent block will be place on the product key to prevent from further abuse".

I did a google shopping search over Xmas last year for Win 7 and found an online retailer who was selling Win 7 full install. From the website it appeared I would get a boxed copy but in the end I received an email with ISO download and product key. Can't remember the website and it was something like "laptoprepairlostock". I have emailed the guy tonight to see what happens, although I'm not too hopeful.

On the plus side Microsoft said

"I would like to inform you also that Microsoft is committed to helping customers who were inadvertently sold counterfeit Microsoft software. If you are willing to provide some details, including some personal information, Microsoft will send a complimentary copy of Windows 7 ultimate to qualified customers who have been sold a counterfeit version of Windows. You must submit a proof of purchase, the counterfeit DVD, and a counterfeit report that contains detailed information about the purchase".

I'll post back on here how I get on with the seller and microsoft

The Key in use is an MSDN Key. Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so. Your Windows Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The S/W has been running for 6 x months, I have tried emailing the address where it came from but no reply so far.

One question is, if Microsoft know this key is MSDN why did they let me activate it and use it for 6 x months making my chances of refund etc almost impossible. i.e. if they can spot now it's MSDN why not when I originally activated. At least then I could have possibly got a refund.

Here's my standard spiel on the time-delays involved in tagging abused keys....

For MSDN Keys:- MS can only act once a key hits a threshold (and they won't tell an outsider what that threshold is, understandably). They then have to put it through internal systems to ensure that all relevant parties are informed, just in case it's an oversight - then it enters the queue for the next update to the system.
I have no idea how often the WAT checking system is updated, but I would suspect that it's no more than weekly because of admin and timing issues. The internal MS processes could therefore take easily a couple of months. It therefore depends on how close to the end of a vendors sales list you are, and how quickly he's selling them.
The cannier ones will sell just enough to stay under the threshold for each product (MSDN subs include a huge number of products), until they've maximised the profits, then try and flood the market before disappearing into the sunset, laden with your cash.
This could take anything up to a year or more.

For products sold using a loader:- The loader gets around online activation by fooling the computer into thinking that the OS is installed onto the correct machine, by modifying certain files.
Because of a number of factors, it's impossible to stop this, so MS came up with the WAT update - which has the ability to scan the relevant files, and detect the use of a loader tool. If the user fully updates the machine, including recommended updates and optional updates, then the WAT update is installed and starts work, and within 3 days, a loader-installed machine will get a notification.
However, the WAT update is a voluntary one, at least at the first update run, and can be uninstalled, or refused The other time the WAT update is installed is when you validate Windows for some reason - it is part of the validation process, rather than the activation process. this time, it does the scan immediately, and again this will show as non-genuine if a Loader is present. If a user never needs/wants to validate, then they need never install the WAT update, and may never see a non-genuine notification.

The seller isn't going to respond. He sold you an illegal key. If that email address is still valid I'd be very surprised.

Ye ... I realise this but I have to at least try. I haven't had an undelivered response to the email but no reply either. I have also tried phoning the number given but no answer there (again no real surprise)

I remembered I paid for this using paypal, when I spoke to them today they said they can only get involved in a dispute if it's within 45 x days of the transaction. The also said they can only cover stuff that is actually posted and software was a dodgy area or not covered. Finally they said if paying for any software using paypal to make sure the money comes from a credit card or bank rather than money in your paypal account as this will give 105 x days (I think) security on the transaction.

I will get back onto MS and see if I fill in the report etc whether they will offer anything (not really holding out much hope here either)

This only shows that you should always buy your software from either at the store(even wal mart), or online places that you know you can trust, such as: walmart.com, bestbuy.com amazon.com, ect..

NoelDP ... Thanks for the info on MSDN keys although to be honest I didn't really understand it. My interpretation is that MS would have issued the key I'm using as an MSDN key with a limit on the number of users (times) the same key can be used. The seller has sold this key to me + another number of users and MS have now picked up that the limit has been exceeded. They do some checks and the result is the key is barred, meaning myself and all other users of that key are screwed.

Unfortunately, you have almost no chance

One of the requirements for a complimentary replacement copy is to send the purchased product and packaging to MS for investigation and disposal. You have no packaging or disks (apart from self-burned ones, which don't count), and therefore fail the test on that account.

HonorGamer - As the saying goes "Hindsight is always 20/20 vision" I have already been looking for a replacement and found myself only on Microsoft shop / Amazon / PC World. I suppose the scammer will always be able to work on human nature and the desire to save money. From now on I won't be one of their victims !!!

You did learn, but it's been a very well known threat for quite a few years that have to buy your licenses from valid sources. The fact you found this vendor by a web search should have been your first clue that something wasn't right.

If you can provide proof of your purchase and turn over the sellers info, Microsoft usually issues a legit key in it's place.

You also can't expect Microsoft to immediately deny a key that's been used too many times. If they were that aggressive, many legit keys would be blocked and it would add fuel to the anti-Microsoft fire.
