I'd take the path of least resistance:
1. backup all data dear to his heart
2. clean install

I'd concur - strange partitioning often means a strane history, which is possbly better erased than worked around!

I should have expected issues doing this as well. I can't access the recovery partition by hitting F8, as the manual suggests. I also can't create the recovery discs because I can't find Dell Data Safe Local Backup installed anywhere on the hard drive. I don't have access to the recovery discs, either, and apparently you can't download them.

My wife has a similar model that I may try using her recovery disc...at least to see if it lets me access the recovery partition. I always wipe that partition away on our own laptops, as we would just do a clean install or repair the OS if needed. This experience reinforces by belief that I'm not missing anything on her own laptop.

I'm going to mark this as solved. I was getting errors no matter what I did, so I gave up and figured I'd do a clean install. As a last ditch effort, I searched more and did find a download for Dell Data Safe Backup Local, which allowed me to make the proper recovery discs. After data backup, the system was wiped, recovered, and it now running just fine, fully updated. Thanks for all the help, effort, and suggestions.
