koolkat, thanks for the suggestions.
sfc scan found no errors and resetting WU had no significant effect. still no text in WU windows or action buttons.
I've been using MSE and Defender, but found out today that it hasn't been running and no matter what I do I can't restart it.
any other advice

Try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html before you saw this problem.

If a System Restore does not fix it try these:

How do I reset Windows Update components?
Fix: Cannot Update Windows using Windows Update | WinVistaClub

If that doesn't help either. I'm afraid you may have to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html or http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

Make sure you keep a *back up of all your stuff.

Btw, are you using any registry fixing programs? If yes, please uninstall them with http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html in advanced mode.

Windows Update problem

Hi all. In answer to camerongrowden and his problem with Windows Update not working, I recently had the same problem. I tried every thing that I could find on the web to fix the problem, but to no avail. It happened soon after downloading Windows updates in June 2012, so I thought it was possibly the fault of a corrupt download. But after doing a system restore I found it did not correct the problem. So after undoing the system restore I remembered I had installed a Sierra AirCard Watcher for my web connection instead of the download manager I had been using, about the same time. I connect wirelessly to the web using a Sierra aircard 320u device. I looked more closely at the menu options, and under the options/general tab scrolling down to the bottom, I found I had to select the option to download Windows Updates Via wireless WAN connections (3G/4G). After selecting yes, I have no more problems. So if anyone is using the Sierra AirCard Watcher and has a problem with windows updates, this is possibly the reason why. Hope this has helped

Just in case - I recently had a situation like this where the problem was related to Vistalizator..... (which isn't needed in Ultimate, but which some people mistakenly use before installing language packs). Please post an MGADiag report - it may show some useful details.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
How to Tell
