    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. Noel (our resident expert in this field) suggested we attempt to reset Windows update. Can you please try these steps, and let us know the outcome
    Open Windows Update
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Never Update...'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
    Now open Windows update again
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Update automatically'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates
    Regards,
    Golden

I might be wrong, but I think 0x80070002 errors are for missing files.

Could you run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) for us please?

Download link: Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

When this has finished, it will generate a log in the following location:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Can you copy and paste the contents of this log into your next post for us please? :)

80070002 errors are usually 'file not found' errors - but they can also refer to registry entries (which is why I suggested cycling WU on and off)

CheckSUR would be the next logical step - or the WU Fixit 50123

Many thanks - to Noel and Golden!

I'd also started getting this error. It started happening after a recent update was interrupted but even a System Restore didn't work. I tried just about everything in the howtos and also the detailed advice mentioned in earlier threads in this site, even removing the Software Distribution folder entirely, but nothing worked - I only succeeded in changing the error code :-/

Then I tried the simple hack mentioned by Noel (via Golden) for changing the WU frequency settings and now it's come back to life!
