I've used someone else as guinea-pig a little earlier today, and am awaiting results on that - I suspect that my 'solution' will work, but I don't honestly know yet, and I'd rather not have to recover two machines at once :)

If you don't mind I'll delay posting the fix until I hear back from the other thread - if you want to see what happens, look here.....

That's absolutely fine. I'll have a gander at that thread and look forward to hearing from you in due course :c)

    Well, that was a bust
At least he seems to be no worse off than he already was, so if you're game, then I am :)

Please run the following commands from an Elevated command prompt.

    Code:

    MD C:\7bbackup
    ROBOCOPY C:\Windows\System32 C:\7bbackup 7b*.*
    DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /ah

    DEL C:\Windows\System32\7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-1.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0 /as

    REN %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.dat tokens.barx
    net start sppsvc

This creates a backup of the two files, then deletes them, then renames the tokens.dat file and and attempts to start the Software protection service.
The reason that there are 4 commands for each deletion is that I'd like to see which ones your files respond to - it may give me a clue as to what caused it.
You will get a message box up saying that an unauthorised change has been made to Windows - don't worry about it.
Please copy and paste the results in your reply. (assuming you go ahead!)

Reboot, and you should be taken to either the activation or Key Change wizard - follow the instructions you are given - if you have to enter the COA Key, you may have to activate by phone.

Not sure it helps but I was having this same issue but I was able to use a registry key edit to fix the non-activation issue.

However I am having tons of other problems system wide including all windows built in services not working and not being able to remote desktop or vnc into computer from internal or external networks like normal. Also windows update won't run, Media Center acts like it isn't connected to the internet, Security Essentials won't start and System restore won't run.

Also when using Google Chrome google sites and some others come back as having invalid security certificates.

Avast, CC Cleaner, Spybot, and Malewarebytes have all come back with no results.

Sandry are you having these issues as well? Mine all started yesterday morning out of nowhere

WGA issues can be vastly different with apparently the same results - please start your own thread and detail your own problems there, including an MGADiag report.

@Kingsule5, just to confirm. No, I'm having none of those problems. The system appears to be working perfectly except for this wretched "Not a genuine copy" business.

Sadly, there was no change after the last attempt Noel. There was no message box regarding an unauthorised change and no opportunity to enter a Product Key. The System page of my Control Panel still says "Status not available" and "Product ID not available" and Windows update still doesn't want to know me :c/

This is the output from the commands:

-doesn't matter, there's nothing wrong there - so we'll have to go at it from teh other direction (in the registry)

Please run the following commands (again?) - post the results.

    sc sdshow plugplay
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-19" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" /S

    net start winmgmt
    SC QC winmgmt
    SC QUERYEX winmgmt
    REG QUERY HKU
    REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20
    REG QUERY HKU\S-1-5-20\Environment
    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20"
