power outage = not genuine

This has been going of for a while. Apart from being close to the most expensive electricity in the world, our area also has extremely unreliable power.

2 out of 3 times when the power goes out for 1 - 2 seconds the computers will reboot. When they come back up I get the black screen and the "victim of counterfeiting" and "This copy of windows is not genuine" messages.

Occasionaly 4 - 5 reboots will fix it, but most of the time it doesn't.

Sometimes, Windows will also complain that the update server cannot be contacted.

It happens on my Windows 7 and WIndows 2008 R2 systems.

The keys are legit - they are from my technet subscription and purchased full retail copies.

I have to re-activate the software repeatedly. Whilst that always works (so far at least, until Micro$oft decide I have activated too many times), but it's a pain in the butt.

Short of buying 6 UPSs, anyone have any ideas how to stop it?

thanks
Tanya

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

(since you're using MSDN keys, you can ignore the last <g>)

There's no signs of any problem on that machine, currently - alhtough it appears never to have been validated, so has neithere the WTA udpdate, nor the Legitcheckcontrol installed, which is a little limiting on the usefulness of the report.

I'm assuming that the machine wasn't showing signs of non-genuineness at the time the report was run?
(if it was, they should have gone now <g>)

Please wait until you get the next episode, and run another report while the machine shows as non-genuine.
It would be useful if the WAT update (KB971033) was installed, as well - it allows extra diagnostics.

Yes, I know about KB971033.

This happens to all of my computers, in no particular sequence. Doesn't always happen, and I cannot predict which one(s) will be affected each time we lose power.

Yes, I have reactivated it. As soon as the power came back on, and I saw the message, I had to enter the key again, then activate again.

It's really starting to get on my nerves.

I fear there is no solution - it's just the flaky nature of Windows activation, but I thought I'd ask and see if I'm wrong.

KB971033 is a lot more that just a 'counterfeit check'!
While that is it's prime function, it also enables more accurate diagnosis and repair of problems with the WGA/MGA system.

Tanya -
What is the exact error you receive on a reboot after power-out? I would advise simply cancelling out of the re-activation request, as it's almost certainly caused by a race condition - which if you allow the system a little time to catch up with itself, will disappear. (we need to see the MGADiag report with the notification showing, anyhow).

What Anti-Virus are you using? most of the time, race conditions are caused by the AV and the Software Protection Service fighting over resources - and if there's added complications from a forced shutdown caused by a power-out, this brings a third player in as the system attempts to repair the MFT.

Hi,

thanks for following up.

The screen background is replaced with the black screen.
The software counterfeiting dialog is displayed saying "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting...."

On the bottom right of the screen it says "This copy of Windows is not genuine".

I always cancel out, reboot a few times. Occasionally that will be the end of it. Most of the time, the warnings persist and so I re-enter the product key, and re-activate and all is then well until the next unexpected shutdown.

I'll have to wait to the next power out to get the exact error code.

I use malware bytes. I have set it to "delayed start".

At the risk of teaching grandmothers to suck eggs, Malwarebytes is not an Anti-Virus!
Do you have an AV installed at all?
If not, I suggest that you do an offline scan with Defender Offline - What is Windows Defender Offline?

Just a little though. Do you use a surge protector. I would recommend using a quality one. It won't stop the power loss but should stop the surge that could be causing all these problems.
