Windows Update is disabled and will not turn back on

I am using a Windows 7 32 bit computer. My windows update has been disabled and when I try to check for updates I get the 'Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.' report. Restarting the computer does not work. I think that I am missing some important updates, so please help!

Windows update does not appear in the Services menu.

I read that windows update is linked to windows defender, which I have found is also not running and will not turn back on. When I attempt to turn it on I get error code: 0x80070424, and it also does not appear in the Services menu.

I am using McAfee which I think could be interfering with Defender, I also ran a Security Check that I found through a previous thread, these were the results:

Hello LCP, and welcome to Sevenforums

While defender may be suffering through the same problem windows update is, they are not linked. Whenever you install a legitimate antivirus program, such as McAfee, Defender should be turned off and disabled, as it is only spyware protection and nothing more. However, as I've seen numerous times, McAfee seems to cause too many problems to work around. Therefore, I recommend uninstalling it. If you would like a lightweight antivirus that is excellent at protection, try out Microsoft's Security Essentials: Spyware Protection | Free Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Now, to work out your problems. Even if you choose to stick with McAfee, please disable it, for now.

Download the file from Option 2 in Brink's tutorial here, save it to the desktop: Windows Update - Reset - then run it. You should see a command prompt open and stream a long list of text

Follow Brink's SFC tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Restart and let me know if anything is different. Additionally, you may want to do a full scan with MSE (if you installed it) to check for any malware that may be part of the problem

I see from the report that both McAfee Enterprise, and AVG Free are installed - NEITHER will function properly in that case.
You should uninstall both and run their respective cleanup tools, and then install your chosen AV (I too would recomment MSE)

Wow, I missed that one. It is staring me in the face. As Noel said, only ever have 1 antivirus.

I didn't find a removal tool for McAfee, but AVG had one: Download tools and utilities | AVG Worldwide use the 32 bit if your system is 32 bit. This ensures that the antivirus is completely removed so as to avoid conflicts with your other antivirus program (the only one you use, whichever it is).
