Usually, problems with updates are caused by errors in the problem systems, not with either the update itself, or the mechanism (there have been one or two notable exceptions, though!).
Please start a new thread of your own, and include details of WHICH updates are failing, and with what EXACT error message.

Thank you for your answer.

"Explorer.exe" (Windows 7 Pro, preinstalled on Dell Latitude) stops working after installing the 4 following Windows Update:
- Update for Windows 7 KB2640148
- Update for Windows 7 KB2729094
- Windows 7 Service Pack 1 KB976932
- Security update KB2691442
(Not all together. Each of them generates the problem)

With all other Windows 7 Update, IE Updates, Office 10 Updates: no problem.

There is no error message.
Simply, Explorer.exe does not respond, and Users folders don't open, after one of these updates.
The problem also occurs in safe mode.
I think there is sometning common in each of these 4 updates, that does not exist in all other updates.

As I have a good Image Disk (clean, fast Windows 7 without these 4 files) , I took time to try many solutions found on reliable websites (cleaners, fixes, deactivate AV or other programs, manual changes in registry, etc.).

Do you have an idea where is the devil?

What Anti-Virus products have EVER been installed on the system? Has any been allowed to expire before replacement?
I would suspect an infection of some kind - have you run any external AV from a boot disk? Perhaps Windows Defender Offfline? - What is Windows Defender Offline?

Thank you Noel for your answer.

I have Kaspersky Internet security since many years and always updated. And also the university firewall. I launched Win malicious software removal full scan. And also Win defender offline full scan. Unfortunately I am not infected, so I don't understand the cause of the problem. Computer is not connected when not needed. And I watch "manually" what it is doing. Everything runs perfectly, except when I install one of the 4 updates mentioned.

Another idea?

Unfortunately I am not a Microsoft expert to know what detail is in these 4 updates, and not in all other updates.

Regards.

Start with CHKDSK /R and SFC /SCANNOW
then download and run the CheckSUR tool -
from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

then zip the CheckSUR.log and CBS.log files and attach them to your reply so we can take a look.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and will exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

Hello,

Thank you for your answer.

Do I have to do that:

"Start with CHKDSK /R and SFC /SCANNOW
then download and run the CheckSUR tool -
from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
then zip the CheckSUR.log and CBS.log files and attach them to your reply so we can take a look."

1. on my clean image disk?
or
2. must I first reinstall one of the 4 Windows 7 updates that hangs explorer.exe?

What 'clean image disk'?

I'll go back to fundamentals

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

then download and run the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

then zip the CheckSUR.log and a copy of the CBS.log and attach it to your reply so we can take a look.

The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and will exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

CheckSUR found no problems - SFC found three problem files the first time it ran, and nothing the second time. Having said that, thre are a huge number of 'failed' errors present referring to Windows Updates.

I think your best bet is to reset WU completely - How do I reset Windows Update components? will show you how, and do it for you
NOTE: use the fixit from the page itself, not the one that you're offered by the overlay.

Use the Fixit option, and pick the Aggressive setting when offered. This will delete your Update History, but your updates will still be installed, and you can see the list by going to the Installed Updates listing.

explorer.exe hangs after some Windows updates

Hello,
Thank you for your answer.
I wanted to investigate more why explorer.exe failed after installing some specific windows updates. However I lost too much time and I decided to format HD and reinstall everything. On one side it is a stupid solution because I don't know the answer and cannot help colleagues. On the other hand, everything works fine again.
The problem is solved, killed with an axe.
