Windows 7 not genuine build 7601 Hi there!
I'm having issues with activating my Windows 7 product key.
My desktop background has gone black with a small note at the right bottom corner with the message:
Windows 7
build 7601
this copy of Windows is not genuine.
I own a 3 year old Toshiba laptop (running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit), the OEM product key sticker on my laptop has worn out, I used a key finder to find my product key. While trying to activate, I keep getting Error 0X8007232B DNS name does not exist. I did try going through the resolution steps here "Stop error code 0x8007232b" or "Stop error code 0x8007007B" when you try to activate Windows without any avail.
Please help !!!

The Key in use here is a KMS Volume License Key - which requires activation against the issuing company's own server.
The installed edition is Windows 7 Enterprise - which is a Volume license only edition.
You will have to contact your System Administrator for assistance, or revert back to teh the original OS with which the machine shipped, using the Recvoery media from the manufacturer. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude! Thank you Noel, and DocBrown for the welcome ! =)
So I believe I installed Enterprise on my laptop myself sometime last year when it got hit by a virus and crashed (think I had the Home edition on before that). My university provides the license keys for different windows installations to students. Not sure at this point why I installed Enterprise of all things (forgive my ignorance ) and I do not know where the Key code for it is.
Quick question - if I do a fresh install of windows with maybe the Home edition, will it fix this issue?
If I do end up doing nothing, besides Security essentials expiring (maybe IE as well ) do I risk the machine become non-functional? I don't really use it for work work these days, but I would like it to be usable for the next year at least.
Thank you for your help! | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit |

The machine appears to be licensed for an edition of WIndows 7, at least - check your COA sticker to see which one.
You can install the licensed edition using the proper Manufacturer's Recovery disks, or using a DVD created from the ISO download from these pages.... Microsoft (so long as you can read the COA sticker and Key there)
If you elect the 'do nothing' approach, you will lose MSE completely - it will stop all function. You will also lose some other functionality, but normal use of applications and such shouldn't be a problem. (I don't think IE 9 is affected, except at teh install stage - but you can always uninstall it from the Installed Updates listing) | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude!
