Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?
I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"
I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.
I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.
Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

Hi -- I am also facing problem with Windows Update. I am running win7 Ultimate in my HP 630PC Laptop. When ever I click on Check for Updates it popup a massage saying--
'' Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.''
I have checked the service ( Control Pannel> admistration Tools > Servises) and windows Update services is set to Automatic and Running.
Then I have checked the setting for Windows update and it is configured to receive update Automatically.
I have restarted the my laptop and then tried to run Windows Update again but without any success. It is poping up same massage.
Can somone please help me and guide me how to slove this problem and receive my updates???

I had the same issue - "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Restarting did not help, I tried restarting both services mentioned in this thread and had no luck.
The fix for me was to go into Windows Update and change the settings to "Never check for updates (not recommended)", click OK, and then change it back to "Install updates automatically". I'm sure that switching it off this way and then choosing any option that enables windows updates would have had the same effect. As soon as I did this, windows update went from having a red X to a green check mark that said "Windows is up to date" (even though it was not - but this signified that the service was now working properly). I clicked check for updates and was successful - several updates were ready to be downloaded and installed.
Hope this helps somebody.

and downloaded ""Reset_Windows_Update_Full.bat"" at option Three. and applied the bat file as guided in the post.

After all these updates we have lost lots of disc space to restore points generated by Windows updates.
So.... you may want to creat a restore point with the date and labled "After Multi Updates".
Then go to your c:\ properties and do a disc cleanup and select all the junk and do an OK.
Then choose the Cleanup System Files Option/More Options/ and select the button that will delete all restore points but the most recent. I gained 14GB back.
Now I'm gonna defrag.
