windows 7 build 7601 not genuine after VRTool:win32/Vbinder.CO

    Hi,
I am new to the forum. At weekend when browsing the net as they say. I clicked on a site and my screen started to flicker then just for a moment Microsft security essentials screen popped up and vanished this happened several times with the screen flickering. Finally full screen MSSE said virous detected, severe, quarantined. No further action required.
When I went back to the desktop the screen had turned black and bottom right corner says window 7 build 7601. this copy of windows not valid. Coincidence!!!
Re inserted product key: failed Product not geniune or being used by someone else.
I installed a new hard drive in June 2012 along with a new copy of windows 7 plus office 2007 and all has worked well. All validated and set to automatic updates.

Rang Microsoft help desk and emailed security center.
I was unable to make out what the helpdesk were telling me and when I asked them to speak slowly and clearly they hung up.

I got this reply from the security centre. One thing to remember is I did not provide the product key.

I would like to inform you that the product key provided in your email is a MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) license for <product> which can be used only for Business purposes. The software with MSDN subscriptions should not be sold separately and we would have marked the product keys from such subscriptions as non-genuine once we were aware that they were being sold in this manner.
Also, if the software is a high-quality counterfeit, our Anti-Piracy team will sometimes replace the pirated copy with a genuine version. To be considered for this, you would need to submit a counterfeit software report at the following website and return the product to us:

    Product code on box 6000120317-20-827704-SLOU

Anyone any ideas as to what has happened.

report should be attached I followed the instructions

    Best Regards

    John

Hello John and welcome to the forums

Where did you get your Windows product key from? Is it from work?

Hi Tom, dare I say Ebay. sealed and had definately not been used. I did email the seller they said they had bought it to upgrade their PC. But turned out there PC to old to take windows 7. So they bought a new PC and no longer had a use for it.
Microsoft have offered me a new product key for £139 but I wanted to be sure first that the copy I have was not genuine.

    Hi John,

In the nicest possible way, I would ask the seller for a copy of the receipt for the purchase of the disc. What sort of reputation did the seller have on eBay? If MS are right, then this guy is selling on MSDN licenses which he could get in a lot of trouble for. eBay might refund your money if we can prove it :)

Here'e the full version of what Tom was saying so nicely :)

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

    Hi Tom,
Feedback was 100% and no other software being sold by them and history did not show any in the past. They are no longer registered with Ebay. Perhaps they bought it believing it was genuine.
If I should not be using it then thats fair enough. Will send discs off to Microsoft with counterfeit software report and info of sellers bank details.
As a solution to the problem Microsoft have offered a new product key £79 for home premium, £109 for proffesional, and £139 ultimate. If I stick with ultimate it will save me doing a full new install.
    They state the following:

Purchase the Get Genuine Online Kit now and get:
    • A new product key sent to your e-mail address and listed on the order confirmation page
    • Backup media sent in the mail
    • Standard installation support from Microsoft
    • The protection and confidence that only genuine Microsoft software can provide
Do you know if backup media means new discs.

    Thanks for your time Tom.

You live and learn, and I should have known better at my age.

    Regard

    John.

    Hi John,

    Have you seen Noel's post?

windows 7 build 7601 not genuine after VRTool:win32/Vbinder.CO

I think he posted it while you were writing your reply.

There isn't even the slightest chance of the seller having good intentions, he was out to defraud you out of your money, and he did MSDN is a service provided by Microsoft (at quite a large cost) that entitles you to use all of the MS software (be it the operating systems, the programming tools or anything else). It is designed for developers because they have to test their software on every OS, but without MSDN that would be quite expensive. When you purchase a subscription, you are given access to multiple product keys (the exact number escapes me, I think it's 10 or 20) which you can use to activate an OS. What has happened to you is that one of these keys has been sold on to you and because it's against the terms of use of MSDN, the key has been blocked at your expense.

You don't happen to be a student, or have a student in the family do you? If so, you could purchase a license through Software4Students. I picked up Windows 7 Ultimate for about £50 :)

Yes, backup media means new discs :)

If we didn't make mistakes, we'd have nothing to learn from!

    Hi Tom,
Student software offering upgrade pack (but I am not a student), I nearly went for the upgrade at the beginning as I had XP on my old disc drive which is still in the PC but the drive was partitioned and not enough free space to load the upgrade. So I opted for a clean install on a new drive. Yes I could have installed XP on the new drive and then done an upgrade with hindsight perhaps that’s what I should have done, but just felt like a fresh start.
As I tend to say "if you have never made a mistake you have never done anything"
Microsoft do send out complimentary software if you report counterfeit software with all details included, but as I only paid £55 for the software I do not think they will make the offer to me.

Time to bite the bullet as they say.

    Many thanks Tom

    John.

NOTE: - the Get Genuine Kit offers are of Retail Keys and disks. They do however have a secondary selt of Licensing Terms, which in effect turn it into an OEM License with teh benefit of 90 days of MS support.
The License cannot be transferred to any other machine.
I note that their prices have come down markedly - not so long ago, they were charging close to £200 for Ultimate.

If you purchase a Full Retail copy of Ultimate from a reputable discounter, it will set you back about £175, but will be transferable to a new machine.
