HELP PLEASE: Updates failed

    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\System and Security
    and select teh Windows Upte troubleshooter (at the bottom)
    * Make sure that you are connected to the internet when you run it.

    Looking around - you're not the only one experiencing this. some solutions point to anti-virus / firewall, others point to startup programs. We'll just have to work through it.

    go ahead and run the trouble shooter. post the results

    Did you try updating after yhe trouble shooter - please do so.

    If you're still experiencing problems try the methods described in the MS answers - linked below:


    Well, Ive read some more and Animate might have hit on the answer - only check one update at a time, cycle through all 9. That was one other person's solution.

    But what if I rather reboot the whole system and start from the begining then working on finding needle in hay...

    Sure, reboot and try Windows update.

    If the trouble shooter solved the problem - then you're good to go.
    If the problem persists, the methods given by the MS engineers are sound problem solving.

    The engineers explain the methods and the steps in each method very well. Hopefully, the troubleshooter resolved the issue and you will be able to update windows without additional steps. But if not, try each method and then try to update windows. When a method works, you don't have to do any more - you're done because Windows update actually updates.

    They're fairly simple - you've done method 1 - Windows update trouble shooter fixed something. did it resolve the problem on your machine? I don't know, you didn't tell me if you ran Windows update or if Windows update worked.

    There are 4 methods provided in the link(s)

    1. Windows Update Trouble shooter
      You've done this already. It found and fixed a problem or problems.
      Try Windows Update - if it still doesn't work - try method 2
    2. Clean boot
      This tells you how to boot your system with a minimal set of drivers and services. If something is loaded in your normal boot that is causing the problem, this method eliminates that as a possibility.
      Try Windows Update - if it still doesn't work - try method 3
    3. System File Checker (SFC)
      This is a MS utility to ensure that the proper system files are where they belong and the files are the correct version. It runs for quite a while and folks around here recommend at least three passes (SFC works in small chunks of files at a t time, so it might take more than one pass). SFC checks files that are already on your system.
      Try Windows Update - if it still doesn't work - try method 4
    4. System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
      This is another MS utility that also checks system files. It's a big download and it too runs a long time. Think of SURT as an offline update. SURT checks files that should be but might not be on your system.

    It's not really a needle in a haystack, more of a methodology. One step at a time.
    I've been up for over 24 hours - too much coffee, time for me to grab some shut-eye. I'll check back to see how it turned out.

    Please post your results after you try each method and see if Window updates work. Someone else might jump in, see what you tried and where you are with finding a solution and offer additional help. If not, I'll check in after I get some shut-eye.

    OK. Thanks again for those tips. I need a rest too. It's like 7:20 PM in Europe now. I will proceede this tomorrow. But I didn't mean just to reboot the computer but to restore the whole system, because if the problems are to difficult to solve, I can start all over again, from the start. I've been using this laptop since 2010 now think it needs a restoration of the system. The registry is clean, I cleaned it few months ago, but still I think if the methods don't work, I will need to restore.
    I will check your tips tomorrow and I will post the step-by-step results as well.

    Ninchie,

    Each step in resolving the issue is the same.
    1) Apply the suggested fix and
    2) Try Windows Update to determine if that suggestion fixed the issue.

    I don't want you to spend any more time than necessary to fix this issue, but problem resolution is a time consuming process. I'll continue to help with this until I've exhausted the known resolutions or until you decide to try a different approach. Please bear with me and post your actions and the results, including if Windows update works after applying a suggestion - include any errors as you've done before. You're doing great so far - it's just tedious work.

    The Trouble Shooter reported that it found and fix a problem(s) - did you try Windows update afterwards?

    I have the identical issue, same error code (80071A90) and fail to do updates since mid Aug 2012. Running the trouble shooter says the same thing as the other person, "problem found and fixed" but updates still fail and when you run the toubleshooter again, it gives you the same thing as before "problem found and fixed"..... like a vicious circle. I will try the steps you gave here and let you know if they work. :)

    See what is in the tutorial section that applies to the issue you are experiencing. The title of the tutorial might show the exact code you're getting or might be something more generic "How to reset Windows Update". There's lots of good stuff there.
