Windows 7: Cannot Complete Installing Updates, or Check for New Updates

Copy the file to your Desktop and zip it up from there It sounds as if WinRAR lacks the permissions to write to that folder.

I think the problem is that it does too many sequential reads, and some of the content is locked?

I'd thought of that, as well, but when I try to paste it to the desktop, I'm met with a File in Use error: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in System. Close the file and try again."

That sounds as if there's something protecting the file - try it in Safe Mode (it may be an AV, or it may be a service that's stuck)

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log


You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link. It must be downloaded using Internet Explorer.

Ah - sorry!
There are a fair number (16) of Package errors still showing which need to be addressed.
I'm actually a little surprised that there aren't more, after the manifest repair.
I know how I'd adress these - but it's not the 'approved' way, so I'd rather let Tom finish the job.

I'll ping him if he doesn't respond soon
