It didn't exit silently. I had to click "close". But here's the CheckSUR:

CheckSUR found no problems

I honestly have no idea what's happening here, so I can only advise you to back up your data to external media, and prepare for a repair install (unless you fancy a really long bout of trying to identify the source of the problem)

See Brink's tutorial on the process, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html - ask questions before you do anything, as it can be too late once it's under way!

I plan on getting Windows 8 when it's time. Do I need to still do a repair install? It may seem like a dumb question, but I'm curious.

If you plan on doing a clean install of Windows 8 then you can get away without a repair for the moment - but if you want to be able to do an Upgrade install, you MUST fix the problems with this one first.

Just wanted to report that the repair install was successful. No more genuine Microsoft messages, and the online tool sees my computer as genuine. Many thanks!!!

PLEASE! - post a new MGADiag report, and a new CBS.log file
I find it very frustrating when people say everything is fine after a repair - and ten days later come back with a 'new' problem

It's helpful to get that warm feeling that you *know* that there's nothing more you can do!

Either way, good luck!

Nah - the file mismatches are because the WAT update has been partially uninstalled by the repair....

Close all open windows.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

and hit the Enter key
Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,
Reboot

reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033
Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it for check purposes (it should be fine!)
