I'll take odds that the 643 errors relate to the .NET updates.
See what happens is you select ONLY the other updates

I feel a little dull here but it doesn't seem to say what updates for .NET updates. Apologies if a stupid question.

    True :)
My preferred order for install would be
    1) the IE update on its own
    2) The Windows Security updates
    3) ActiveX
    4) Other Windows Updates
    5) the Visual Studio update (which is .NET-related)

Do each group separately with a reboot whether or not it installs OK, then proceed to the next group - note which fail and which pass.

    Results:

    a) two of three security updates failed. Attached screenshots with results. Error code 800B0100 comes up.
    b) the normal windows updates failed when installed together but passed when installed one at a time :)
    c) all other updates passed :)

I followed the steps in Microsoft's website to use the update readiness tool as outlined here. Didn't work yesterday and didn't work today either.

Not sure how I can install the last two updates manually, don't think I can download them on their own and install them. And if I could, kinda doubt if they would work.

Thanks for all your help Noel, any way to send you a beer?

Just created a snapshot in Virtualbox - gonna try an "in place upgrade" and see if that solves the issue. Can always roll it back using virtualbox if it doesn't work or if some files/settings lots that are important

The in place upgrade didn't work - would not install properly using Virtualbox. Restored the snapshot with the two update errors

I need to call in the cavalry on this one- there are a LOT of errors in the CheckSUR log!
    - unfortunately, they're undermanned at the moment so it could be a day or two
