Thanks ! same problem - solved
windows unknown error 8024402f when checking for updates.
I also tried many solutions including new clean OS installation but none worked.
As soon as I uninstalled .net 4 and installed .net 4.5, updates were available again
thankyou for all the details, they were extremely helpful.

Uninstalling .net 4 worked for me as well
