Odd behaviour for this patch Tuesday (Oct.-09-12)

I am inquiring if any members have experienced this, I ran these updates from 7:55pm to 8:22pm EDT this evening 10-10-12.

I have Windows set to check, but let me decide.

For my particular setup I received 14 updates:

    • Four for Security.
    • Nine for a general update.
    • One for the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

The four started to download then stopped, and restarted the download.
    The installation went okay.

The nine did the same thing, except for the installation phase. It stopped, re-started the download then restarted the installation twice.
After the second installation phase it concluded successfully.

When I clicked OK on the one to start its download it went right to installation.

As an afterthought I forced a check for any more updates, and a MSE showed up. With my fios (25/10) it took over a minute for 238KB, went to install, and that took longer than usual.

All updates showed they installed successfully.

Our machine seems to be running okay, and all other web-sites that are visited snap to completion.

Could this be a situation on MS's update server, our machine, our ISP?

As an aside, before these 14 showed up I was notified that I had a Silverlight update. it was the same one I hid several months ago. When I tried to hide it again it cleared my check-mark, and reverted to the original notification.
    I did this twice.

I finally closed then re-opened Windows Update in Control Panel, and all was normal with the update in question hidden. Another MS update server glitch?

I updated a number of PC's with Win7, Vista, and XP. (USA Eastern Time)
Everything went smoothly with no problems installing all updates together.
I just updated a W7 32 Bit PC 11/10 apx. 11:30 PM and no problems.
The attached screen print is for a Win7 64 Bit PC with Office 2010, updated 10/09 apx. 7:30 PM.

You make an interesting point Dave about downloading, and installing all updates together.
I believe it is a holdover from my earlier days in running computers with the slower machines that I downloaded and installed updates in blocks as I laid out in my OP. From the bottom up 4,9,1

    Attachment 236065

I just updated the five updates (all together) for my XP box and it went without a hitch, but then it is 6:30am EDT.
Where are MSs update servers located, near Oakland, California or do they have server farms across the country?

This may take several months to figure out if it is time of day sensitive for my location. It was early evening here on the East coast, and the MLB Division playoffs were on, and next month Windows updates will be butting heads with the Presidential elections.
That is when I'll try updating again, at 8pm EST right in the heart of the web's busiest part of that day.
Don't forget, we'll be going to EST Sunday 11-04-12.

I did find this: Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working, but don't want to use it since I haven't seen any red warnings while updating, and I do have the option to run SFC /scannow.
    Defrag is 0%.

Hi Noel! Just saw your post, you made me chuckle to. I'm going to concentrate on yesterday's entries.
We must be on the same wavelength shudder the thought, I was going to take my out, but now I'm going see your , and raise you .

I'm off for morning chores, back in a few hours.

FWIW, last night I just hit the OK key and forgot about it - it was a bit of a shock when it cam up to ask for the reboot:)
....had to delay it about 5 times before i got bored and let it go ahead.

    No problems.

I just updated my Vista and win7 install media.

Interesting to do - saves alot of time and effort when you have done it.

Finding which updates you need is the tricky bit - there have been about 500 for win7.

I only need about 100 of those.

    I did two computers.
One computer I did a few at a time starting at the top and rebooted whether ask or not after the few were installed. I did download and install the defender scan tool and MSE updates separately as always. All went well. The other computer I downloaded all at one time and rebooted at the end and all went will with that method as well. I'm just trying to find the best way to do these large Updates. The only thing I do the same no matter which method I use is; I do nothing else on the computer when this process is going on.

Well, I spent about 3hours going over my update, and CBS logs, and the first thing I would like to say is, I have a new-found respect for the MVP and Community Contributors they have certainly earned those badges!

I have gone over logs before, but not with this intensity and for them to do this day in, and day out takes a certain kind of stamina.
I stopped about 4hours ago, and my eyes still hurt a bit, and my brain isn't quite as mushy.

Okay, here's what I found out.

Yesterday when I went to download and install the updates I accumulated eight error codes most of them dealing with permissions.

As I went down the log the order in which the stop errors occurred seem to suggest this course of action.

Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working and System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008
    Should take care of these errors 80242013 - 0x80190194 - 80070005

    These three are about proxies: 80072ee7 – 0x8024402C - 0x00000000
That made me think about whether or not my LAN settings were set to Automatically Detect, and they were in IE9, but I have been having trouble lately with FF15.0.1 not responding so I checked its settings and it was on Auto detect, but I had the option there to set it for No Proxies.
After I made the change, and restarted FF I haven't had any problems with it.
Error code 0x8024402C when you try to install updates on Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites

By the way, for the FF users: Mozilla 'temporarily' pulls Firefox 16 to address security flaw

These two were tied together: 0x240001 0x8024000B, and Noel, I had the same restart glitch you had, it may be tied to this error. 0x8024000B Windows Update error 8024000B

The CBS log also contained errors such as:
    Code:
2012-10-10 20:00:38, Error CBS Failed to process single phase execution. [HRESULT = 0x800f0816 - CBS_E_DPX_JOB_STATE_SAVED]

I'll have to go over these later.

    Nice tip! I'm trying it.

Usually when I click on that type of setting the other one will be automatically selected that's why I never bothered to try it.

I'll let it ride like that and see how it goes, thanks Layback.

Just wanted to add that I ran SFC /scannow 3x's, chkdsk and the msert tool all came up clean.
