Trying to run that, and I'm getting 'the system cannot find the path/file specified'. I've tried to run it a few different ways. I'm guessing I need to put my user profile in there? If not, I've tried running it exactly as you have put it and I'm still receiving the cannot find message.

This almost identical to another machine I'm helping with elsewhere - I'd love to find out if there's anything in common between the two.....
Please open MSINFO32 and use File Save to produce a report, then zip it and attach it to yor reply as well

Make sure that you get the spaces right in the command -
    I'll highlight them here.....

    DIR<space> C:\Windows<space> /AR<space> /S<space> >%userprofile%\desktop\flist.txt

Still getting an error that it cannot find file/path so I'm trying it a few times and making sure I'm typing it all correctly.

It should work fine if you just copy/paste the one from post #10 (at least it works for me!)

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

OK - try this then -, run both commands, then find the file for attachment (in C:\test)

    MD C:\test
    DIR C:\Windows /AR /S >C:\test\flist.txt

Great - and i have discovered why there are such a large number of files:)

The vast majority are in the C:\Windows\Installer tree - on my main system that amounts to 2257 files out of 2279!

    I wish I'd checked before, now :)

I need to have a rethink.

    Everything else looks normal enough.

Hmm - best check those numbers anyhow - please run the following command and post the number of files found

    DIR C:\Windows\Installer /AR /S
