Windows 7 OEM Suddenly Not Genuine after HD Upgrade

Hi, I upgraded the HD on my HP Elitebook 8540w laptop. WIndows 7 Premium, OEM, from HP, system still under warranty. No problems for a couple weeks after the upgrade, then Windows is suddenly not valid. It is wierd. The System Properties shows Windows is Valid. But Windows Update and Microsoft Security Essentials will not update. The online check at Microsoft fails.

I loaded the Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool to see if you had any other ideas.

Thanks for reposting (and welcome to the forum!)

This is a slightly atypical case, but....

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

(you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

dude! Great suggestion!

Wow. I hope that works, it was a great suggestion. In the background, this was the SECOND HD upgrade. Had not even thought about that. A year ago, I went to the new Seagate/Momentus hybrid drive, with Intel SSD technology, as an upgrade to my laptop. NO issues. None.

A week or more ago, I upgraded again to the newest Momentum drive, a 750GB.

Not a bad guess at all that the drivers are mismatched now.
Great suggestion, I'm on it now.
Update to follow.
thx!

Update. That fixed the problem, thx!!!!!

I spent 2 hours with HP tech support, gave up on Microsoft, and you fixed it in only a few minutes, thx!

To finish the thread: At a guess, when I upgraded the first time I also updated drivers for the Intel chipset on the Seagate Momentus Drive. This drive has a cache SSD integrates with the hard drive, very high performance.

When I upgraded a second time, a year later, Windows did not see the new device as different, or whatever, but basically I was operating on less than the latest drivers. Interestingly, there was no warnings, and I was operating for almost 2 weeks before the Windows Validation Service finally threw a red flag.

I updated the drivers, per your suggestion, and no more issues.

thanks again!
