Yeah probably will take a long time, unfortunately your speeds are now considered low while a year and a half ago they were still pretty decent. But with free power nothing to lose :)

If you wanted to mine to invest with BitCoins you could always use your GPU and save up till you have enough to pre order a jalapeno Pre Order Form – BitForce ‘Jalapeno’ | Butterfly Labs
Then you will be able to mine faster as well still be able to make a profit once the BTC block value halves or if ASIC cards cause the difficulty rating to go way up.

4.5GH/s That's about 9x what I'm currently getting. Using the Bitclockers calculator, apparently I'll break even with that in about 3 weeks - surely that can't be true? That's assuming 0.00/kWh and accounting for the soon to be 25BTC/block.

Non of those ASIC cards have been shipped yet and only pre orders. Also there has been over 7000 Preorders of the ButterFly Labs products (Mostly jalapenos im guessing) so once these ship you can see a huge increase in the global hash rate, it could skyrocket up 100T/Hz this would make the difficultly rating go up making bitcoins harder to generate to keep things in order but also ending the days of GPU mining possibly as it might become profitless. There also the block value drop that it suppose to happen sometime soon on top of all this and the cards getting released so who's really to know what gonna happen.

But if you could current get a hash rate of 4.5Gh you would be earning a little less then the BitClocker calculator as you would be paying that small premium for PayPal withdraw but still not bad at all. Now think of the current miners who have multiple rigs setup and are mining at 40Ghashs with the current difficulty rate must be making a nice profit considering power isn't too expensive.

Once you get a high enough hash rate you can switch your mining method to try and solve a block on your own but you would need a substantially high hash rate or your random chances of actually solving a block by yourself would be too low and you would not earn anything for your mining unless of course you actually manages to solve a block. But then again it's all random so there is a chance that you could turn your CPU on and solve a block it's just very, very, very^1000 unlikely.

Going back to the calculator even if you put the BTP value per block down there's no way to know what the difficulty rate will change to.

So sorry for the delay, I thought that I had replied to this.

Thanks again for all of the information - I don't think I could have picked a better person to ask! You seem to know everything about this. I didn't even know what an ASIC card was before this thread, so you really do learn something new every day. You learnt that I can fix your Windows Update errors, and I learnt that you're a bitcoin guru

Save this as a bookmark, then highlight the number of bitcoins you have and click on the bookmark and it will convert it to GBP. If you want another currency, just change the BTC_GBP.html in the script below to BTC_***.html (where *** is your currency code, e.g. USD).

    Code:
    javascript:var%20%20t=((window.getSelection&&window.getSelection())||(document.getSelection&&document.getSelection())||(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange&&document.selection.createRange().text));t=String(t);if(t!=''){(function(){%20%20window.open('http://coinmill.com/BTC_GBP.html#BTC='+t);%20%20})();}else{alert('Please%20select/highlight%20a%20KB%20Article%20number%20on%20the%20page%20first!');};
Thanks to AceInfinity for the original script, and for letting me adapt it!

    Tom

    P.S. I've earned 60p so far

    Pretty good trade too :P
I was dealing with those update errors for so long and just started putting off updating. Im so pleased to finally be up to date with working drivers again.

Thanks for the link, now i can actually know the exact amount i have rather then just lazily guessing what the current BCT value is.

60p or .60BTC ? Your hashing around 250Mhash if you continue to do so for a full week it should earn you around $6USD per week for free. Not bad at all for leaving your computer on.

BitCoin Guru lol, i started the same way you did wanting to make a little extra money for free and try and save up for a computer... Then i got my 5970 and had money left over for a Jalapeno so thought i would stick around and try to learn how it all works.

Thanks again for all your help
    Bob
