Windows Update Issue

Yesterday the icon appeared stating Windows updates would be installed when I shut down my computer or at 3AM. (I have auto update enabled)

I shut down the computer immediately but no updates were installed. A click on Check for Updates was negative. Later in the evening another icon appeared notifying of updates to be installed. I clicked on the icon and there was a message stating "Updates not needed". I followed the same procedures as above with negative results. Today I also checked for updates with negative results.

Seems very strange ? I scanned with MSE and Kaspersky online scanner with negative results. Computer running normal.

Is there a published list of Win 7 updates that I can review to insure my system is current ?

Have you checked the updates history for recent entries, just to be sure nothing was installed?

There was a MSE update installed yesterday (21st).

As I recall, the icon stated there were 6 updates.

You can download Belarc to help keep track of them. It'll show the updates that are missing (if any) as well as a bunch more stuff about your machine. I run it once a month on each machine.

@Noel - I ran the Windows SURT. It seems to be for computers that have received a Windows error code when downloading updates, which I have not. I did download and run using method 2, but it only led me back to the Check for Update option on the control panel. I will run the SFC Scan later.

@F5 - I ran the Belarc advisor and it identified 2 Windows updates missing. However, one was for a 64bit system which did not apply and the other was KB2720973 which is an update applying to Windows Certificates, which I could not get to download. Belarc also identified other security vulnerabilities, my score was .063 out of 10 ? From reading, it seems the vulnerabilities identified would be of concern to a network or a business. Belarc is a nice tool, sure tells you everything about your computer.

Another incident occurred this AM. When I checked for updates, 3 optional updates were listed, one of which was a Definition Update for MSE. Assume the MSE update should not have been optional ?

I will continue to monitor especially on Tuesday, the normal day for Microsoft updates. The only updates I have received since 11/16 have been for MSE.

I removed the Updates which contained the corrupted files for spelling/hyphenation.


Ran sfc scan which found "no integrity violations" I could not locate the actual log.

True, it is the IE10 beta.

I think you may be correct. I installed IE10 beta on the 22nd, can't recall if it was shortly before or after the initial update issue.

Briefly, what are other reported problems with IE10 on Win7 ? Also, when you say "all such software" meaning beta software or software that may not be Win7 adaptable ? IE10 would be the only beta software I have.

Also, so the browser can effect updates and other areas ? Thanks !
