Sorry - my fault - I forgot the Quotes (again!!)

REG QUERY "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment"

ou have a really complex partitioning scheme - with Windows on (presumably) the C:\ partition, the Windows Temp folders on the D:\ partition, and the Program Files folders on the E:\ parition (where does the Data go?)

How many physical drives do you have?

What else do you have redirected to the D: partition?

please run the following command, and post the results...

REG QUERY HKCU\Environment

(no quotes required this time!)

Eh, it's not really all that complicated.

C:/ is a 32gb Solid State Disk - Windows runs on this but due to space limitations - and a desire not to over-use the disc and shorten its life - there is no swap file on this drive - and all programs and data except any programs that do not give me the option to choose where to install (most of which I never install, there is no excuse for this) are stored elsewhere.
D:/ is a 1000gb standard hard drive - All data is stored here - windows and browser temp folders, user folders and profiles, and so on. swap file present - this is also where backups are stored temporarily (before DVD burning)
E:/ is a 1000gb standard hard drive - All programs are installed onto this drive, both x86 and x64 swap file present

So there are three physical drives, each partitioned as whole drives and designated as C:, D: and E:.

I should also point out that the message has not returned yet. I am wondering if this might have something to do with having changed firewall.

I was using Zonealarm but I got annoyed by the constant self-advertising popups so I replaced it with Comodo.

I make a habit of blocking all network traffic with the firewall when I go to bed or am liable to be away from the computer for more than an hour (I generally leave my computer running) - however I have always done this so I don't see why this would be the issue - unless Zonealarm was letting things through when it shouldn't have (which wouldn't surprise me, I have lost all trust in that application).

Ah - it begins to make sense, then - shoehorning a full Win7 install into 32GB isn't that easy a proposition, once you have updates and everything else installed (my current System drive is using 106GB, of which just the Windows folder claims to be using a mere 31GB)

Something is obviously telling FSS that the %systemdirectory% - which is not normally defined in Win7 - is on the D: drive. OR, you have a junction/Symlink that's having the same effect.

Once you start moving that amount of stuff off the system drive, unfortunately, it's likely that you will come across this type of problem.

It may be deducing the Systen32 folder from the TEMP location, rather than using the %windir% spec? (which would be rather naughty)

I'll ask someone to take a look and come back to me - for various reasons, he may not want to participate in the thread.

Yes it was tricky, and I am under a constant struggle to housekeep even so I only have about 4gb free after and each time it is a little less.

Various reasons eh? Does he work for Checkpoint? Should I retract my statement about Zonealarm, their wonderful flagship product?

You can probably tell from the data I have submitted that I am a developer, reasonably "advanced" in my knowledge of Windows, and also somewhat security conscious.

I have been a long time admirer of this forum and bow to the collective wisdom herein, however having said that I question whether we are going down the right track in terms of my creative partitioning - given that the system has been stable for more than a year without seeing this issue.

Or is it simply a case of exhausting all possibilities?

Some more information from the registry that may help:

SystemDirectory is defined in:

HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Windows as %SystemRoot%\system32
HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet002/Windows as %SystemRoot%\system32
HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Windows as %SystemRoot%\system32

SystemRoot is defined in:

HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion as C:\Windows
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion as C:\Windows

windir is defined in:

HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Session Manager/Environment as %SystemRoot%
HKLM/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Session Manager/Environment as %SystemRoot%
HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Environment as %SystemRoot%

Personally I stopped using ZA back in the days of Win ME - it crippled too many systems even then.
Once they started adding various idiot programs to it, I began recommending against it, and try never to mention it!
Since you mention ZA - when you uninstalled it, did you run their cleanup tool?

I can't say that I see the necessity for third-party firewalls in most (99%) situations - Windows firewall is perfectly good enough unless you are deliberately trawling in dengerous territory, especially if you're behind a NAT router.

I suspect that your problem was caused by a race condition - with the Software Protection Service on the losing end.
The latest MGAdiag report shows a validation failure - with the mode of failure consistent with a firewall getting in the way
