Windows 7: SP1 Update Failing, Error 80070002

Hi Noel, hope you had a good new year!

I've just finished another scan on the machine and below is the link to the CBS folder. He tried the SP1 update again and "got bored" because it was still going after 30mins... Now, I know his machine is slow and only has 2Gb of memory in it at the moment. Soon to be fixed. The problem is that because he's a manager he's got a bit of attitude about it all and getting information isn't easy :/

Thanks once again!

Please run a CheckSUR report and see what you get....

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply
That CBS log looks a bit scary

Noel,

Thanks for your response. I'm downloading the software now. But I just thought I'd ask as I now any minute my phone will ring with him asking for an update... is it worth just rebuilding the machine? Or should we just plug away and try and fix it?

Whenever I check his machine when he's complaining of slowness there is always some update installer running and using a ton of memory. It doesn't help he's only got 2Gb in there anyway and as it's a 64bit machine I'm getting it upgraded.

I'm just wondering if it's better to cut our losses and have done with it really!

Thanks,

Jay

Totally up to you!
Certainly the quickest solution in terms of what your client sees is likely to be a reformat/reinstall - although a Repair install with an SP1 disk may also work, it's not certain to, and *may* also not fix the basic problem.

Well I'm running the SUR check at the moment. So we'll see after that. It's installing some hotfix, I assume thats right?

Thanks,

Jay

That's fine - it uses the TrustedInstaller service a lot - which has the interface built in, so it looks like a patch, rather than a standalone.

Wow!
Code:
Seconds executed: 3412
 Found 215 errors
 Fixed 215 errors
CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 189
Fixed: CSI Payload File Missing. Total count: 189
CSI Store Directory Missing Total count: 26
Fixed: CSI Store Directory Missing. Total count: 26
That's pretty good!

let's see what the SFC has to say now

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Glad to see it's done something then! He's now away for a week, so no rush on reading this one Seriously thankful for all your help though so far!

And one more SFC scan...

The SFC scan is clear (but there are a lot of package errors, which I would have anticipated being spotted by the CheckSUR tool)

I can't help feeling that the CheckSUR scan didn't complete - please run another scan, and post the new log.
