SP1 Update Failing, Error 80070002

Hi All,

I have a users laptop that is failing to install SP1 with the above error code (80070002). WU is installing other updates so it appears to be a problem with SP1 rather than WU. Installing while logged in gives me the error code but if you hit shutdown then it just sits on the Configuring screen and the user has had to hard power off the laptop after a few hours.

I have a CBS log from running SFC /SCANNOW. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=BDD25521554A802A!107&authkey=!ADYyd7tNJ8wHEqY

WU log from last week, I spent Friday (30th) working on it and then the log continues to date. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=BDD25521554A802A!108&authkey=!AGPFbvJJZepjwak

Any help would be amazing! Unfortunatly this is a managers laptop so if I can avoid doing a rebuild that would be great.

Thanks!

Jay

Sorry for the stupid long delay... had a few problems.

I haven't been able to run the SURT as I can't download it at work at the moment. Another problem...

But I did run the SFC again and have zipped up the entire folder this time.

http://sdrv.ms/URnkOq

And the error code is in the first post. Hopefully something can be gleaned from this! If I do manage to get SURT running I will let you know!

It did install another small update fine again today. I keep disabling the SP1 installer though.

Thanks!

I've uploaded a file - aimavxx.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21526
Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
This should create a folder C:\aimavxx

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
At the prompt type
DIR C:\aimavxx
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
DIR D:\aimavxx
or
DIR E:\aimavxx

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

XCOPY <drive>:\aimavxx <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

Hi Noel, I've copied the files over as instructed. However the guy is off on a business trip for our last week before the Xmas shutdown, so I'll run the scans when he's back in the new year.

Sorry for the delays and thank you for your help so far! I guess I'll talk to you in the new year, have a good one!

Hi Noel, hope you had a good new year!

I've just finished another scan on the machine and below is the link to the CBS folder. He tried the SP1 update again and "got bored" because it was still going after 30mins... Now, I know his machine is slow and only has 2Gb of memory in it at the moment. Soon to be fixed. The problem is that because he's a manager he's got a bit of attitude about it all and getting information isn't easy :/

http://sdrv.ms/X2Z3UY

Thanks once again!

I know the type :)
Please run a CheckSUR report and see what you get....

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply
That CBS log looks a bit scary :(

Noel,

Thanks for your response. I'm downloading the software now. But I just thought I'd ask as I now any minute my phone will ring with him asking for an update... is it worth just rebuilding the machine? Or should we just plug away and try and fix it?

Whenever I check his machine when he's complaining of slowness there is always some update installer running and using a ton of memory. It doesn't help he's only got 2Gb in there anyway and as it's a 64bit machine I'm getting it upgraded.

I'm just wondering if it's better to cut our losses and have done with it really!

Thanks,

Jay

Totally up to you!
Certainly the quickest solution in terms of what your client sees is likely to be a reformat/reinstall - although a Repair install with an SP1 disk may also work, it's not certain to, and *may* also not fix the basic problem.

That's fine - it uses the TrustedInstaller service a lot - which has the interface built in, so it looks like a patch, rather than a standalone.

That's pretty good!

let's see what the SFC has to say now

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.
