It's more likely that System Mechanic and/or RegCure are the source of the problem - such products have a nasty habit of making changes to the system that are not only unnecessary, but harmful.

It would be stupid if that software did it. But you're right... cleaners are most of the time "piece of crap"

Okay, Finally finished installing updates. Close to 200 installed. There are a few install failures see attached windowsupdate file.

System Restore was turned on for the C drive. I did increase the storage allocated.

I've found the cleaners have made good improvements when system continues to degrade. What would you recommend for registry maintenance which seems to always junked up???

    If you uninstall software normally:
    • Some registry settings are still there. This is because of: In case you reinstall the software you have the same settings again.
    • Same for user settings in files in %appdata%
Registry will be a bit fragmented, but unused space will be reused automatically. This doesn't degrade your performance. Nor will the remaining regsitry keys slow down the machine. Don't use those tools!

Yeah, well take a look at this log to see the sort of damage they can do:

    Microsoft Updates has gone crazy

I highly doubt you'd notice any changes made by registry cleaners/optimisers, nor space improvements. The only performance increases that you might see are if startup programs were disabled. The registry isn't very big at all, so there really isn't a need to clean it.

My advice: Leave it be :) It's what I, and many others, do. Sure un-needed keys will build up over time, but they're really not an issue at all. A clean install every few years will remove any crap that accumulates in the registry.
