    Update cycles on shutdown

First, allow me to state that I'm both impressed with the quality of your help and pleased to have found your site.:)
    Now to my problem.
During shut down of a Win 7 Pro box my screen indicates “Please do not ...” and then “Installing update 1 of …” The preceding two screens cycle continuously. After three minutes I pressed the power button
So, after Google, reading dozens of solutions, and many of the solutions on your site I'm totally confused. Some solutions seem to apply, almost; some seem to be concerned with startup. What to do? Thought I'd just let you lead me down the correct path.
What information do you need in order to start?
By the way, a bad CDROM drive, connected via SATA, probably did not help (startup was tenuous). Drive has been removed; yet to be replaced.

CheckSUR fpound a couple of problems and fixed them.
SFC found rather more - and could only fix some of them.

It's not as bad as it looks :)
I'll work on a fix, but it may be a while as it's a busy day for me today.

I'm having problems sourcing two of the files - so we'll go with what I have for the moment....

    I've uploaded a file - lisa374.zip - to my SkyDrive at https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=936736BB8FCEB92F&id=936736BB8FCEB92F%21526
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
This should create a folder C:\lisa374

Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\lisa374
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\lisa374
    or
    DIR E:\lisa374

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\lisa374 <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file

Thanks NoelDP for your work on my problem.
Did as you wrote; everything seemed to go O.K.
Attached please find one .zip find containing the latest CBS.log file.
    Again, thanks for your expertise.

That went better than I expected - tehre's only one file remaining for repair, now!
That file is to do with Visual Studio 2008, and I'll need time to work out how to do what's needed for it - I've managed to find the source, but the file is in an exploded format no amenable to my usual methods.
That said, there should be less problems now with the system.

    What happens on shutdown now?
What happens if you attempt to Check for Updates in Windows Update?
What happens if you attempt install found updates?

    Hello NoelDP,

    Per your questions:

Shutdown was long, but without problems.

Booted and ran Windows Update. Found 2 updates. After clicking “Install...” got Failed: 2 updates...
The suspect updates were KB2737019 and KB 2729449. These are the same two that have always failed since Nov. 14.

On shutdown got “Please do not power... Installing update 1 of 2.., 2 of 2”
    Shutdown OK.

Powered up, logged in as limited user. Waited 10 minutes with no user input/activity. HD and network activity settled after about 8 minutes.

Shutdown. Accomplished quickly and without error messages.

    Looking good. Thanks much Noel.
