>NET Framework 4: Bad Install, lost access to External Drive

Strange issue (s). Running Update, and I had to (supposedly) install .NET Framework 4. Didn't think nothing of it till I lost access to my External Drive. After playing around with everything, I finally was able to use the Repair/Remove tool for .NET. Course when I tried that the first error I got was "Generic Trust Failure", then on the next try, "Fatal Error". Finally around the 3rd try it worked. Then I had to run a "chkdsk /R E:" in order to get back into my external. Everything seems to be fine now, with everything working smoothly.

But....it's now asking again for the .NET Framework 4 to be updated. Plus I found these files, in this order on my external:

37328d6b76a4cc287702f36971784b9c
ca5b7723d9a85b9e698c90
MediaID.bin

I've never seen them before, and I can't find anything about them. Do they have something to do with this Update? Can I delete them, and if not, is there a way to hide them?

Plus with all the problems I had accessing/fixing everything in the last day or so, I'm kinda hesitant to install the Framework update.

Could use a bit more advice. Anyways, should anyone have a thought?

UPDATE:

Looked into the files a bit more;

58af50847d95ac97f7 has in it "MPSigStub.exe" which seems to have something to do with MS Malware Protection

And the next 2 files have in each of them:
NDP40-KB2533523.msp
NDP40-KB2533523.msp

I think the MediaID.bin file is from W&'s backup feature. But what's odd about, is I haven't used it. I use a 3rd party software.

I guess what I am getting at, is that this update worry's me. It messed up my PC bad a couple of days ago, and it wasn't easy getting it to work again. Has anyone else had this issue? And likely a silly question; but, can I ignore this update?

Regarding those files and folders, Windows Update does write files to the root folder of a hard drive during an update and sometimes they'll stay there for a while. Don't delete them :) To be honest, I'm not 100% sure whether they are temporary files or not, but they won't cause you any harm, that's for sure. MediaID.bin is made when you do a backup, it's perfectly normal. If you ever need to transfer your backup to another drive, you must copy the folder and MediaID.bin - just for future reference, even if you use a 3rd party tool. Maybe your 3rd party tool uses the same file, I don't know. It's also harmless though.

Not a silly question at all! An update shouldn't need to be ignored as in theory they should all work. We'll prepare your system as well as we can prior to installing this, then we'll make a restore point and finally, we can install the update :) If things go wrong, which they shouldn't, we have a restore point to fall back on.

Well, sorry it took so long to get back to everyone. But I tried to run what you asked, but I stopped at Windows Update. It gave me a list, I installed, and there were no errors. Everything is working fine. So, unless this pops up again, I guess we can count this as solved?
