Windows 7 Home Premium Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine

Hello, I'm working on helping my cousin out with his laptop that has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. He got the laptop from a friend and wanted to do a clean install of Windows so he used my copy of Windows 7. He had the same OS before wiping the hard drive and installing a new copy. It's been fine for about a month after installing it. Now it's saying "Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine" on the bottom right corner on the screen with a black background. Here is the MGADiag report:

For some reason, the notification in the corner that says "Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine" isn't there anymore. I'm on his laptop right now and I asked him if he did anything that would cause that and he said he's not sure but the last time I checked before right now, it was there. I don't think he did anything that would fix it though since Microsoft Security Essentials is telling him that "Windows did not pass genuine validation" so the problem is still there.

Thank you to who ever helps us out with this.

He needs to change the Product Key to the one on HIS COA sticker on the machine's case.
The Key currently in use is System Builder one, rather than an OEM_COA one - which means that it's probably yours.

You then need to uninstall and reinstall the WAT update -

    Close all open windows.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key
Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,
    Reboot

    reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033
    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

I'll reinstall the update and all that but what's strange about what you said is, its not my key. Before we wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7, we found out what his key was, wrote it down, and then used his key during the installation. But i'll post back here later when I get a chance to use his laptop again.

There's no need to reinstall - assuming the COA sticker Key is for teh same version/edition of windows as that which is installed.

Use the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page

Never mind - I misread it. Is the COA sticker for the same version/edition as is installed?

OK - once the WAT update is reinstalled, please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate before running the MGADiag tool again.

Sorry for the late reply. Haven't been able to use his laptop for a few days. To answer your question, his key is for Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit just like my key is for. I just uninstalled the update with CMD command and then reinstalled it with the link you provided. I rebooted and ran MGADiag again.

There are multiple problems - not the least of which is a hack that attempts to cirumvent activation/validation

Best way to fix it now (since we don't know which version of RemoveWAT was used) is to run WATFix....

Download WATFix - make sure that you click on the link in the page, not the big shiny buttons!! - and use that.

Post back with another MGADiag report, and we'll then see what we can do.

Good - that's cured most of the problems :)
The remaining one will be a little more difficult.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

I ran CHKDSK and SFC and I attached the CBS log.

Only error that I saw was one saying "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

    Heres a new MGADiag:
