It's possible that there was corruption in a setting somewhere which triggered the crash - which forced teh system to re-evaluate the setting and correct it.

Are you now problem-free?

Turned out to be a .dll module (Dropbox) that caused the crash. It turned up once before in explorer.exe crashes, but the usual culprit was USer.dll. Since the registry was rolled back, I lost the ability to capture explorer.exe dump file logs.

Hopefully I'll not encounter further issues.

PS: I was considering the jump to Win 8. Thoughts?

Unless you have a good reason to do so, I'd think again - Windows 8 really only comes into its own for systems with touch-creen capability.

My PC is actually a touchscreen & I'm finally getting a tablet for Christmas. My only concern about updating now is that they've already announced the launch of the next version of Windows!

Windows 9/Blue is a way off yet
I'd say go for it.

Yea, thought so. Just remembered seeing an announcement. The way it was worded, you would barely have time to get used to 8 before 9 rolled out.

Heh. Windows versions will be much more frequent events in the future - I wouldn't be surprised to see them an annual event, in order to increase the takeup and revenue, since they are bringing the price down, and introducing paid-for extensions such as Media Center, rather than such things being part of the OS.

Yea, I remember reading that as well. Took them long enough to catch-up with the 'new' technology but then again we're talking about Microsoft.
