Windows 7: Win 7 x64 SP1 Update Failed, Error Code 80070002

Try this
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following command

fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

you should get a success message - reboot, and try Windows update again

The command was successfully excuted, but Windows update still failed. It seems to fail during the download portion on the update -- always at 87.2MB/29% complete.

Download and save the standalone update - from Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center ( you'll want the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe file.
Run the download and see if it installs OK

Sorry, I meant to come back to update my previous post to say I was doing just what you suggested. It also fails with the 80070002 error code.

Noel, I appreciate all your help, but I think I'm gonna let this one go. I suspect that the only way to fix it is to perform a fresh install and I don't feel like going through the pain. Thank you for all the help.
