That's actually an Access Denied error - the question is what is being denied.
I don't honestly know where to go from here

Perhaps I should point you at the MS WGA Support contact, and see if they can help - their probable route will be a repair install (maybe after trying a couple of simple fixits). Support may or may not be free depending on your location and their opinion of the cause. Make it plain that it's a WGA problem and I believe it should be free.

WGA Support can be found here

North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

Outside North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

Please let us know if (and how) MS manage to repair the problem without a repair install of the OS - it would be useful for future reference!

Mind if I give it a go before you send him off to MS Support?

Hello BazzBro and welcome to the forums

Could you go to this folder:

C:\Windows\servicing\Version

And tell me the name of the folder inside there please. It should be a version number, like this: 6.1.7601.17592.

System Look

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:
    :folderfind
    C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Then this:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    REG EXPORT "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version" %SYSTEMDRIVE%\tom982.txt

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of this into your next post.

shouldnt i use ":folderfind

Hello BazzBro,

Sorry, that error is because I made a mistake in the folder name, I forgot to include one of the slashes. I have amended the instructions in my original post, so could you follow them again please?

Try it the easy way.....
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command....

DIR C:\Windows\winsxs\*servicingstack*.* /S
DIR C:\Windows\servicing\*servicingstack*.* /S

Post the results....

Here are some instructions to make life easier
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
