Windows 7 32bit - Windows Update Service Not Running Error

Windows Update Service Not Running Error

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running a restart may be required

This is an Acer Iconia W500 Windows 7 Pro 32-bit tablet PC. Automatic Windows Updates worked for a while then quit working with the error posted in the subject.

The system is running Symantec Endpoint Protection v 12.1.761.4971 and I have insured that the usual problematic advanced settings of "Enable OS fingerprint masquerading" and "enable stealth mode browsing" are turned off.

I attempted the automatic Windows "fixit" function with no sucess.

I have verified that the required services as outlined in other posts on this same topic are indeed running.

I applied the recommended hotfix for 32-bit Windows 7 at KB947821 to install the System Update Readiness Tool which installed. I then ran in an ECP: sfc /scannow which ran to 100% with the message: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Attached is a zipped copy of the CBS subdirectory of Windows/logs

Here is the result of an FSS scan:

Try this first - while I take a look at the logs.....

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Success!

I did the "select Never" and then "Select Automatic" cycle of option in the Windows Update options dialog and as soon as I did, it pulled down an update to Windows update, installed it and restarted the machine.

I was then able to do a successful search for updates and they are downloading as I type this on another machine.

I had tried cycling to one of the other options and back to automatic but had not tried cycling to the "never" option but that did the trick.

Thanks you so much for your help!
