Windows 7 build 7601 not genuine message, slui will not run

The System Writer seems to be functioning OK - which means it's got to be something else...... (and here's where I get out of my depth!)

Please run the following command in an Elevated Command prompt, and attach the file to your reply...

vssadmin list providers >>%userprofile%\desktop\noel1.log
vssadmin list shadows >>%userprofile%\desktop\noel1.log
vssadmin list Shadowstorage >>%userprofile%\desktop\noel1.log
vssadmin list Volumes >>%userprofile%\desktop\noel1.log

That should append the data to the existing noel1.log file

Here is the (attached) modified file.

Click on the Start button
In the Search box, type dcomcnfg and hit the Enter key
The Component Services dialog opens.

Expand Component Services, Computers, and My Computer.
Right-click My Computer and click Properties on the pop-up menu.

The My Computer Properties dialog opens.

Click the COM Security tab.
Under Access Permission click Edit Default.

The Access Permissions dialog opens.

There should be three entries there (SELF, SYSTEM, Administrators) - please list the existing Permissions ticked for each in your reply, together with any other entries present.

SELF and Administrators should have both Local and Remote access ticked.
SYSTEM should have only Local Access ticked.

adjust as required, and OK out.
reboot, (note the time, please - for later cross-reference in the event logs)

Followed your instructions to the letter.

SELF and Administrators have both Local and Remote access ticked.
SYSTEM has only Local Access ticked.

So nothing to change. Rebooted system anyway at 17:32 - I know, a bit pointless.

Not at all! - it means that the problem probably arises because the Network Service doesn't have proper permissions.. we now need to work out why,
(and I'll have to delay a more detailed response until tomorrow)

As I said earlier, a repair install doesn't work. Perhaps the only way forward is a clean install.

It would be great to fix this problem, though.

Undoubtedly, the quickest solution would be a reinstall - but yes, I'd like to find the cause and resolution as well.

Up to you -if you want to carry on looking for it, that's fine by me, but likewise, if time pressure or other factors mean that you need to reinstall, then go for it. I'd try a repair install first.

I'm happy to continue trying to find a solution.

I did try a repair install before I started this thread which failed. I'll have to take the computer back to the users tomorrow but I work nearby and I can still try things out at lunchtime or in the evenings. As far as they are concerned, it works fine (except it doesn't update and shows the not genuine messsage).
