Windows 7: Windows 7 starter updates won't finish and can't be cancelled?

I've updated every time windows has told me to, and I haven't had any problems and they usually finish really quick, but this time it's stuck on the start up screen and just says something along the lines of "update 20 of 76 don't turn off the power or unplug" but it's been installing update 20 for 3 hours so I turned it off. Well actually I took the battery out because pushing the power button did nothing. Probably not the smartest thing to do but I was desperate. Even after it turned off, it just resumed the update. I can't do ANYTHING while it's updating, and I don't even know if I downloaded this update because I remember seeing a tray icon that said "downloading updates: 0%" not long ago. What do I do?



I have an acer netbook by the way.

Hello Rachel and welcome is this a brand new machine - not trying to be funny but am not sure if you have any programmes that you have installed on it?

Because if you have then you might need to go back and do a system restore and then pick the updates that you want to download in batches and not as the torrents that Microsoft gush out.

Yep Saura thats why I reckoned on a restore and do them in small batches. I did also think of a factory default to and start from scratch
