The update in question is .netframework 3.5 I have tried the windows update fix it program and that didnt work. I have tried renaming the sofware folder in windows folder to old. but that does nothing.

If you modify an existing post, the system doesn't flag the thread as being unread, and doesn't notify the other participants that anything has change - a reply post tells the system to flag it, and email all involved.
I suspect that the problem is with the basic .NET install - and that can only be cured by a repair install or clean install.
