Upgrqading to Windows 8 from Windows 7.

I have a desktop computer that has unfortunately become corrupted. Further, I can't find the recovery disk I once made. This PC runs Windows 7 Home edition 64-bit. I figured the best choice would be to run a Windows 8 upgrade while the price is right.

The question I have is this: when I attempt the upgrade, does the previous Windows version, the one I am upgrading from, need to be running, or can I boot from the install disc, entering the product code when prompted? Thanks.

To benefit from the reduced-price offer, I think you have to log in using a qualifying OS - the upgrade itself also requires a qualifying OS to be installed and running (although there are ways around that).

I can buy an upgrade disc for more money. This I am willing to do if I can be reasonably sure that I can boot from the install disc.
