Windows Updates Not Installing : Error Unknown (Sits on Installing)

    Hi,

To give you some back story, I built my computer the end of August 2012. Ran Smoothly. I decided to get a 60 gig SSD to be the partition that stored Windows. I didnt have much stored on the Main HD so I deleted my original 2TB HD and tried installing on the SSD... found that the SSD was bad and sent it back. Decided just to stick with the 2TB HD. Had some issues installing windows back onto the HD as it would just hang up. Finally managed to get windows installed, had some "Not genuine" issues but that resolved after multiple restarts. That brings me to where I am at today and I feel as though the system has been getting worse. I would normally be fine with just a clean install but with all the issues I had with that initially I am very skeptical of trying it again. I have 5 important updates and 7 optional updates all of which do not install. The Installer just sits on Downloading updates and I have left it overnight with still no result. I am not sure if this is even my main issue but I am beyond the point of figuring it out myself so any help would be appreciated

I downloaded the System Readiness Tool and it Ran. I tried running the sfc /scannow in Admin cmd prompt mode and get a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I attached my CBS file. Any help you could give or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome Faticus just as matter of interest why did you give up on the SSD? was not it under warranty?

That is heck of a drive to be installing on mate just how did you prepare it for the install?

You can run a chkdsk in Windows too > My Computer > right click on the drive > Properties > Tools > Check now - then follow the points in my pic.
You then reboot and it will start a chkdsk (in DOS).

It was an impulse buy because it was only 30 dollars at the time. The computer wouldn't recognize it in the BIOS, I tried switching the connectors in the back. I decided I didnt really need it so I just got a refund as the boot speed difference was negligible in my mind. I'm waiting on them to become cheaper for the larger storage ones and then I'll probably give it another go but this whole process has opened up a whole different can of worms for me. I am also wondering if I have registry issues based on some of the other threads I have read.

I did end up running chkdsk on my hd to finally get Windows reinstalled. I literally might have run it 10 times before it finally accepted the full install instead of getting hung up.

Or, to put it another way....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot).

Looking at the generated data from the CheckSUR and SFC logs.....

You have major problems, according to CheckSUR:-
    Code:

According to the CBS log, you also have major problems. (the current log contains at least 1310 errors, generated over the past 24 hours)

I think that your best option is going to be at least a repair install - or maybe even a Clean Install.

Haha yea ultimately I would like to do that but my concern goes beyond that at this point and would just like a normal functioning computer. I will run the chkdsk when I get home and see if it allows me to run a repair. If that doesn't work I will try another clean install but at least now I have some people that can guide me through it if I run into more issues :)

If you keep having problems with a clean install it points to one of two things.....
    .
    1) a hardware fault
    2) you're doing something wrong

    Check your RAM with Memtest86+ - www.memtest.org
Check your HD with the manufacturer's test utility
Reseat all cards, etc, and disconnect all unnecessary devices for the install (just have one HD connected)
Check your Power Supply - has it got enough oomph?

No worries mate - just a personal thing I don't like drives over 500GB to be honest the big ones have been more trouble than they have been worth and overrated. Best to stick to a small one for OS and then use the larger ones for data backup etc

I am currently running the chkdsk. Unfortunately I only have 2 internal 2TB drives in this machine. Most of my old builds I destroyed the smaller HDS after throwing what I wanted to keep on my eexternal. I can go out and get another 60 gig ssd if you think its that big of a difference.
