OK - we need to do some cleanup then

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.
    then try the troubleshooter again

OK - sound like there's a permissions problem, or a registry problem.

Please run the following commands (one at a time) and post the number of files and folders found in the summary at the end of each....

    DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AR /S
    DIR C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution /AR /S
    DIR C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution /S

That may give us a clue what's happening.

That'll do - and well done for correcting my typo along the way! :)
    Unfortunately, the results aren't enlightening
I'll have to think about it - back later.

    Hello,
I had the same problem, and there was no cure for a long time. Some days before I downloaded and run ComboFix. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
It deleted some files, and after that the MS HotFix run successfully, corrected one problem, and finally I was able to install the update...
Hope it helps you as well...

Please do NOT use ComboFix without the instruction and assistance of an expert in its use - it can trash the system if you're not careful!
