My Windows 7 Ultimate has been installed since May 2010. Yesterday evening I got the black screen as a background saying " Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows is not genuine." I bought this on an ebay auction for $149.99 and the product was described as "Brand New Windows 7 Ultimate Full Version in Retail Box." I believed this and still believe this. Can you shed any light on this?

I have contacted Microsoft and they have given me instructions on how to return what I have including sales receipts, dvds, etc. The turn-around time is 6-8 weeks. One question is this: what does not work now?? I've tried most things and they seem to work. I've backed up my personal files on a usb drive just in case.

If I go thru with the Microsoft instructions and receive the new copy, I will still have to re-install everything. Is there any way possible to keep from re-installing everything?

    Thank you

The Key in use is an MSDN Key from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key (all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

You may be able to get a complimentary copy of the OS from Microsoft - fill in the Counterfeit report here...

You will NOT have to reinstall, unless MS only send out a Professional Edition to replace your Ultimate. Simply swap the Product Key over to the new one and activate that.

Please note this has been on my computer since May 2010!! It will be 3 years coming up soon.

Also, I mentioned Microsoft said I should send them info including the 2 DVD's so they can replace what I have. They said this would take 6-8weeks. Is my computer usable during that time? So far I'm seeing the nuisance of a black background and intermittent messages.

Please note I have a card labeled msdn Universal under my name of Russel G Shiflett. My subscriber ID is 12130423. I've been a member since 2002.

Does this help in any way??

You can see I'm pretty confused.

Microsoft have blocked the Key for abuse - you will need to negotiate directly with Microsoft for a resolution.
