I need to have a play and see if I can replicate the problem somehow, despite not being able to access the original file that these errors refer to.

Did as you said. See attached the log. Interestingly the last command you gave resulted in an error message. See attached screenshot. Did you make a mistake or did we find a possible cause?

Just to let you know....
The problem is the permissions on that Key - the default permissions are for the TrustedInstaller service to be the only 'user' with anything other than Read permissions, and it's also the Owner of the Key.
We need to gain access for the Administrators group so that we can write a new subkey - but then we have to return the ownership afterwards.
Unfortunately I can't find any simple tool to do the job even semi-automatically, so we're going to have to do it the hard way, which is a little risky.
I also have to workout the minimum data required for the new subkey, and the permissions required before we do anything.

So - as a summary, this is what I need to do.
1) Change Ownership on the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\ key
2) change permissions to allow Administrators full control
3) place the new subkey in the registry (using a .reg file)
4) check that the new key is present
5) amend permissions on the subkey if necessary
6) Change the Owner of the subkey (to SYSTEM)
7) Change the Ownership of the Key
8) amend the permissions of the Key.

...and get it right first time!

So you'll appreciate that I need to first of all make sure that I'm doing the operation on the correct key.

Unfortunately, it looks at the moment as if I'm not :(
When I remove that key from a functioning system, I don't get any error in the SFC log
Your system appears to have the v2 version of the patch properly installed, so I can see no reason for it to be looking for the v1 version at all.
The only thing I can think to do is to do a full registry search and see what it throws up (if anything!)


Please download the 64-bit version of RegScanner from RegScanner: Alternative to RegEdit find/search/scan of Windows
(direct link http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner-x64.zip )
extract the files to the desktop - there's no real installer - anr run it.
leave all settings at default, and in the Search for box, type
Package_2_for_KB2705219
click OK
Wait for the scan to finish
Click on View
Select HTML - All items
this will open a default browser window with all the data in.
Please save that as an MHT Web Archive file (or print it to the XPS document printer) and attach it to your reply.

I seem to be missing something here - those results are the exact ones I would expect in a 'perfect' system.
So either I'm looking in the wrong place, or I'm reading the reports wrong in the first instance.

I'll have to review the thread and start again from scratch.

Hi,

No problem at all. It's been baffling me for months :)

Did you manage to reread and get any new inspiration? I tried to enable extensive logging for Microsoft installer via some tips on the Microsoft website and run the update again to see if that produced anything but it appears the update fails very quickly, before even a log entry is created (it almost instantly told me it failed).

Would it be any good if I tried a repair installation using the installation CD?
