Windows 7: W7-64bit Feb-2013 Updates; KB2799494 Failed, Error Code 80070057

I only needed the one file - C:\Windows\System3\config\COMPONENTS - not all of them!
That's going to take me a while to digest (and a few drinks, probably!)
back tomorrow!

Ahhhh.....I looked back and the COMPONENTS file is ~44MB.
I copied to my Desktop and here is download link to just that file.

OK - I think I've got it this time...

I've uploaded a file thkaa.zip to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive please download and save it.
Extract the contained COMPONENTS file to you desktop.

Now open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\config folder

right-click on the COMPONENTS file there, and select Rename - rename it to COMPONENTS.OLD
now copy the COMPONENTS file you extracted into that folder (make sure that it appears there!)

Close Windows Explorer, and reboot

now run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS.log file

First...had a friend that is fairly PC savy ask me if I had turned System Restore on.
I asked why and he said sometimes for security updates if it is off then the update does not like that fact. So, as you know from previous in the thread I have RollBack RX installed on my PC (many of them) and it disables System Restore during install. You can have it on but kind of pointless since the restore points are within a RX snapshot. So, for grins I turned on SR and tried to create a restore point.......failed....see attached PDF of the screenshot. Note, I checked Volume Shadow Copy in the SERVICES and while it is set to MANUAL it was started. I was able to CTRL-ALT-DEL out of the task and went back in and while it showed SR was ON, and I had allocated 10% of the HDD space to it, but no restor points.......I then tried the KB update.....failed, but with no error message. So, went ahead and turned SR off to try your suggestion/file.

I followed the instructions and after reboot I ran SFC....posted is CBS log.
I also tried the KB update.....failed....with same Error Code.

Interesting results - please run a new CheckSUR scan, and post the new CheckSUR log file

FYI, I tried doing the update after the SURT install/run and still failed....same error.

That's still clear.

Now please do a manual check for updates - and attempt to install just the oldest update showing.

I'm not sure I follow exactly..........I donwloaded the KB2799494 MSU onto my PC a week ago for the KB....note, MSU not EXE. Are you saying to run that KB MSU ?...check out the links to make sure.

FYI, besides this KB the only other updates that are not installed on my machine are two BING items which I had previously hidden.....don't like BING.

re: BING - I've detested it ever since MS stole the name - the BING toolbar and Desktop are hidden on any system I deal with, also

Please try the install first from Windows Update - we need to check that everything is functioning properly.

I'm not sure I follow.......only updates I have are the online single KB thru the Control Panel>MS Updates or running the MSU for the KB I downloaded. I have run both just now and they both fail. Is there some other way to "manually" try ? I also do not follow the "install oldest update"......the only one I have is the KB2799494 (except for BING). Sorry for my dumb questions.
