Windows 7 not genuine message after two years of no problems

Hello - I have been using Windows 7 for two years now, but all of a sudden I am getting messages that the product is not genuine. After two years! Surely there has been a mistake somewhere as the product was succesfully activated when originally purchased, and used without problem since then... any ideas?

Where did you purchase your Windows 7 license?

The license in use is from a MSDN subscription which have very strict usage requirements. Unless you obtained this key from an employer, educational institute or your MSDN/TechNet subscription, your license is counterfeit.

I bought it from a reputable seller on ebay: he does run a bona fide computer shop.
Never mind - I guessed there wouldn't be an easy way around this so I've just ordered a new PC with windows 8 pre-installed. My current machine is a good 5 years old so it seemed like a good excuse to upgrade. Wifey didnt complain anyway!

As Tom mentioned earlier, it was an MSDN licence which is not for sale - thus this seller cannot be reputable. He may run a computer shop, but selling MSDN licences is illegal.

He's not very reputable at all, I'm afraid, as what he's doing is illegal.

MSDN/TechNet subscriptions exist to allow developers to purchase one subscription, giving them multiple licenses for each Windows product so that they can test out their software on Vista, 7, 8 etc. before selling it to the general public. Anyone can purchase a subscription but developers are the target market really. The problem is, like other services, this is being exploited. Counterfeiters purchase a MSDN subscription and sell off the licenses individually - something which is against the terms of use, and is illegal. This is what has happened here and you have been sold a MSDN license.

Hi - no, the shop isnt still going or I'd have filled in the 'report counterfeit software' thing on the MS website to see if perhaps they might give me a complimentary copy seeing as I had bought and used it in good faith.
Still, if nothing else it has taught me never to buy Windows from ebay again!

Fill in the reports anyhow - if you have the relevant paperwork, you may get a complimentary copy or Windows from MS for your trouble.
You should also log it with eBay and PayPal - they may be holding funds available for refund.
