No updates are installed on this computer

Using win 7 home edition 64 bit. Ran and installed updates yesterday. Now I have minutes long waits for any program or action. When I looked to reverse the update, "no updates are installed on this computer", is displayed in the installed updates window. Also, none of my restore points are seen. This is a first. I have tried reboots, and McAfee scan. What's next?

Hi Manfromron and Welcome to SevenForums. Try this Click Start, input services.msc in the search box, press ENTER to open the Services. Then ensure the "Windows Update" service is set to automatic start.

Added : Might want to take a look at these links SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker If you get this error message " Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service " when you try to run SFC /scannow then take a look here http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/fi...-sfc-in-vista/

You say you have McAfee installed - which version?
What AV was installed on the machine when it shipped?
What other AV's have you had installed in between?

What other security software is currently installed?

Thanks folks for your quick replies.
I am waiting for results on VistKings suggestion.
The search initially showed no results from the "start" pane.
    I am searching "computer" now.

While I am waiting for the second search...
This issue is on an Acer laptop. I don't recall if there was AV per installed before I loaded McAfee, that would have been more than four years ago. I'd tell you the AV version if it didn't take so long to do anything right now. AV software is automatically updated so it is current, and has not provided any issues. I have not had anything like this occur on any MS products in the past, at least since the last win update.

Please post an MGADiag report - I suspect I may know part of the problem.

Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report

    https://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

    Hi Manfromron

Another way to get into Services is by Holding down the Windows Logo Key ( In the middle of Ctrl and Alt ) and press the R key . Once the Run Window opens up type in " Services.msc " without the quotes and click on the OK button. Inside the Services window scroll down until you locate " Windows Modules Installer " and Make sure the service is set to Manual .

    Run Window

Thanks VistaKing, I've changed the setting to manual.
Finding my previous restore points gone is a bit troubling. Starting anew.
    McAfee has updated twice today.
System is behaving more normally but Shockwave Flash is crashing on Chrome browser. Now I have to consider an infection affecting Shockwave despite the scan being negative.
Standing-by for Noel's response to my previous post, but your attention is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Ron

Unfortunately, what I was expecting/hoping to see in the report isn't there ( a specific set of errors) - so we'll have to look elsewhere.

The TrustedInstaller (Windows Modules Installer) service is an odd one - it's the only one I know that regularly changes startup mode.
Its 'normal' state is Manual - but if the system thinks there's work for a reboot to do, then it switches the service to Auto in order to begin the patching at a much earlier point in the boot process, and if the processes end with a 'success' message, then the service is switched back to Manual.

If the service was at Auto, then I suspect that the problem is that something is telling the system that there are pending install operations to be done.
