Windows update not working since last patch tuesday

Hi

I've had issues trying to install all of last Tuesday's updates, some of the updates refuse to install & some change the boot drive from C to D & Windows automatic repair wont fix the issue.

Now I have issues with Windows update, it just keeps reporting an error that Microsoft's Fix It tool cant fix.

I've run the SURT tool & done the SFC scan & both haven't fixed the issue either.

Windows update gives error code: 8024402F

Code:

Hello Forky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to reset and reregister Windows Update may help.

Thanks for both the replies, I tried the info link Brink posted first & that didn't fix the problem.
I then tried the info link that VistaKing posted & success.

I rebooted the laptop & then manually checked for Windows updates, it found 5 but I installed just the one update for MSE to update the actual program ( not just the definition files ) & when I rebooted the laptop again I got the startup repair screen.

It did an automatic repair & asked for a reboot, again it went straight in to start up repair screen & after trying for a while it just came up with it couldn't repair the fault.

I've now got the following error's showing in start up repair diagnostic screen:

Boot critical file d:\windows\system32\drivers\mpfilter.sys is corrupt.

Repair action: File repair
Result: Failed, Error code = 0X2

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed, Error code = 0X490

My Windows 7 is installed on C so I've no idea why it's reported a fault on d?

Any more idea's?

Thanks.

That's great news Forky.

The other issue good potentially be malware. I would recommend that you do a full scan of your system with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free just to be safe.

In addition to the scan Brink suggests, please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested files.

Hi

I had to use system restore as the machine was unbootable even trying in safe mode.

I've done a full system scan with Malware bytes ( 3 hours 26 minutes ) & that didnt report anything amiss.

I've run the SURT / System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 & that installed ok.

I've also done SFC scan & that reports " Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations "

Attached is the CBS log:

Attachment 256151

At the moment there are NO Windows update error code's.

I still have 5 update's to install.

KB2804527 for MSE

KB2778344
KB2790113
KB2790655
KB2799494

Any particular order to install these in as when I tried installing the MSE KB2804527 yesterday on its own it just made the machine unbootable.

Thanks

The CheckSUR scan corrected some minor (and probably irrelevant) errors.
I can't see any significant errors in the CBS log - but there are a lot of errors like
Code:
2013-02-20 14:37:58, Info CBS Session: 30281591_3773013570 initialized by client WindowsUpdateAgent.
2013-02-20 14:37:58, Info CBS Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]

Please post your C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file, and I'll see if I can make any sense out of it.

It looks to me as if you have corruption of the datastore.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Run the following commands

NET STOP WUAUSERV
REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
NET START WUAUSERV

wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed (in your case, since all updates are the same date, run the MSE update on its own)
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.
