Windows Update stopped working Code 8007370B

    Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum but from what I can gather, you guys know how to resolve Windows Update errors.

Each time I run Windows Update I get error code 8007370B.

I've tried running SURT but that fails straight away with the error on the screen shot attached.

    Please help!

    All the best,
    Glenn

    Hi Glenn,

SURT is really a self install Windows update, so......

    What update (KB) is failing?

You can try the Windows Update Troubleshooter in Control Panel, and How do I reset Windows Update components?

If those do not help, try manually checking for updates and bypass (untick) any causing problems. If you get some to download and install, go back throught the offers and select one at a time.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've followed the Windows Update Posting Instructions and tried to run the SURT utility (Windows6.1-KB947821-v25-x64.msu) but this fails immediately with the screen shot I included on my first post.

Windows Update does not offer me any updates at all.

When I run sfc /scannow, this also fails with the following message:

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Glenn

OK - let's try a few things then....

First - try running this Fixit from this article.... Error code 0x8007000D when trying to activate a Windows server 2008 or Windows 7 machine using any type of product key.
(it's a very similar cause, I believe - hopefully the tool isn't totally specific to activation services)

then reboot and try running SFC again.
If SFC still crashes, try running CHKDSK and SFC from the Repair Environment....

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Repair Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

    Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
    - if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
    then type the following command

    CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

    Once complete, type

    sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.
    (example - sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=P:\ /OFFWINDIR=P:\Windows)

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

    Post back with the results.

    Thanks for the help Noel.

I've done as you asked. CHKDSK didn't detect any errors, so my drive is clean. The sfc command produced the same results:

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

OW - that doesn't bode well.
Let's see if the Event Viewer has any information available....

    Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

I can see so indication that CHKDSK was run recently - the last time there's a CHKDSK log is from October last year (and that was on drive D: - the last on drive C was in July)

There are a lot of recent NTFS errors showing for drive H:

You've also had a few crashes with a 0x1a code indicating possible RAM problems..

I think this is hardware-based, and you need to check the integrity of all hardware - especially the RAM and HD.
DOwnload Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org - create the boot media, and run it overnight to see if it finds any problems with the RAM.

Download the HD manufacturer's disk test utility, create the boot media, and test the drive.
