Success! It's now downloading the updates. Thank you very much for your help!

I just have one other question. Previously I did a clean-boot restart to windows. It disabled certain applications such as anti-virus, etc. Is there a way to undo that, and revert the restart back to it's original use? (I'm not sure if that makes sense)

Go back into MSCONFIG, and tick Normal Startup on the front page, then click OK, and reboot on request.

You are missing the obvious one.Check for malware if you have this error code.

If BFE & BITS were missing then verify if you have following services

    Windows firewall
    security center
    Windows defender

Did you actually read the original post?
Sometime ago, I recall stumbling across a backdoor virus on my PC. It prevented me from accessing any of my programs, including the internet. I had to go into safe mode to remove the virus.

Lol..Zero access removal has become so easy .User may still have zero access and is missing those services.

Agreed that there may still be other residual damage to services....

    @Zeropressence
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands....

    NET START WSCSVC
    SC QC WSCSVC
    NET START MPSSVC
    SC QC MPSSVC
    NET START WINDEFEND
    SC QC WINDEFEND

post the results, and we'll see where we are :)

Indeed, when I went to check up on those three security protocols, none of them were turned on, and could not update/turn on. Some of them also came with specific error codes. Would you like me to include them in the next post?

OK - please download the file wdscfwx64.zip from my SkyDrive - extract the contained file, and Merge it as before.

NOTE: the three service startup types may need to be adjusted, according to your other installed software.

    Current startup types are
WinDefend: - Manual (suitable for use with MSE - you may need to change it to Disabled for use with other AVs)
WSCSVC: Auto(delayed) - should be OK with most security software
MPSSVC: Auto - if you have a third-party firewall installed this will probably need to be reset to 'disabled'

Please let us know ALL security software currently installed (AV/Firewall/Ant-Malware apps and scanners etc.)
