Computer stuck 13 of 17 Windows updates

Have a friend's computer that started Windows Updates and got to 13 of 17 and won't go any farther.

Tried re-starting (I know they say not to) and it gets to 13 and won't go any further.

Also can't start it in Safe Mode.

    What next?

Maybe this: Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

And this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If all else fails, download and install each remaining update manually. Several months ago, I had one W7 patch that would extract its files and then could not find them??? I had to point the installer to the files that it said it could not find 3 times during the install.

Run SFC like this: SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot

Sorry, I can't get to ANY screen except the Windows Update that says installing 13 of 17 do not shutdown the computer. it's the processes after the original download that installs the downloads and then restarts.

I think what happened original was the computer was in the middle of updating when it was restarted.

Ah - what if you try accessing the Advanced Boot Menu (tapping F8 before the Windows boot starts should bring it up) This should give you the option to 'Repair your Computer' or one of the other recovery modes.

Do you have a Repair disk, a Retail disk, or a Recovery Disk (or nothing?)
