    Windows Update Error Code 8007370B

Windows update has not worked for me since July of 2012. I have tried to repair the installation via upgrade from the install disk with no success. I have since run the SURT and tried to run SFC with the following error: windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.

The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate X64. The windows update issue prevents me from installing SP1, IE 9/IE 10, and some other SW as well.

    Thanks for any possible solutions.

Hello nolimitkemet and welcome to the forums

101 errors to fix - this could take a while! You've got quite a lot of registry corruption which isn't helping matters so let's fix that all up and see where it leaves us.

    Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

    1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
    2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

      https://www.dropbox.com/install
    3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

    4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
    5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:

      • C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS (it has no file extension)

    6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
    7. This will create a .zip file in your Public folder.
    8. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please

    Dropbox Link Included

Based on your instructions to others, I anticipated this and the corresponding link is as follows:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/j5liqum1f9...mponents.zip?m

    I really appreciate your efforts.

    Hello nolimitkemet,

I'm not sure whether it's my tired eyes reading lines twice or something playing up somewhere along the line, but your CheckSUR log has some very confusing things in it! I have fixed roughly 50 errors so far but would like to see the changes in the CheckSUR log before I continue.

Could you download this file please:

    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/nolimitkemet.zip

Extract the contents to your Desktop, there should be one file, components (it has no file extension).

Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config\ and rename the components file found in that folder to components.old as a backup. Now copy and paste the components file located on your Desktop into this folder. Reboot your computer, run the SURT and upload the CheckSUR.persist.log please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Should you run into any error about the file being in use etc., reboot and try again.

    Hi NLK,

Thanks for the logs. I was expecting more than 29 lines to be fixed but I must have miscounted them. I'll fix up the rest now and upload it as soon as possible,

    Hi NLK,

You're most welcome for the help!

I have fixed another, larger, batch of errors from your CheckSUR log so we should see some big improvements with this fix. Before I continue and fix the remaining errors, I would like to see the logs from when we use my latest fix as quite a few of the errors in the CheckSUR log may actually be coming from places that I have already fixed. Parts of the COMPONENTS hive are much like a chain, if you remove one link then there will be problems at either end of that link - it's easy enough to fix in the forward direction but tracing back through the hive is a lot more work so I'm hoping a lot of the errors are merely cosmetic at this moment in time.

Repeating the same procedure as before, can you use my latest COMPONENTS hive fix:

If you have any questions, or are unsure about something, please feel free to fire away.

    Hello Tom.

Just completed the same process as before with the results attached in the CBS-3 zip.

The downward trend continues with 50 errors found and six fixed.

I again say thanks and await your next reply.

    Best Regards,

    Hi NLK,

It's a good job we got a fresh log before I continued fixing the corruption because I was right in suspecting that the errors weren't all they seemed to be. It makes my life a lot easier which is always nice!

We should have you all up and running in a few more posts but it's getting late here now and I have the joyous feeling of having to wake up for a 9am lecture tomorrow so I will have another crack at the last stage of the repair when I get back.
