Windows 7 updates, installing to external hard drive?

I've recently plugged in an external hard drive onto my computer and noticed when performing a windows update, the temporary files are put onto the external hard drive. Upon a restart, the files are gone from the hard drive.

My question is, are the windows updates installing onto the external hard drive? Why are they putting the temporary files onto the external hard drive as well?

Windows Updates certainly shouldn't be putting files on any external hard drive - unless you've also changed environment settings.

What exactly are you seeing?

When installing a new update, on the external drive a folder is created with a long numerical name and sub folders, usually the net 4.0 updates things. If I restart then the folder is gone from the external hard drive after windows does it's updates at turn off /turn on.

So in essence during installation of updates, the temporary folder is created on the external hard drive, then after restarting to finish the installation, the external hard drive is completely empty again.

Ah - that can happen....
WU picks the hard drive with the greatest available space as the temporary store for update installations - you can delete any files that are left over after a couple of reboots.
