Windows 7: KB2670838, platform update

A platform update is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1



fyi, my WMP 12 and WMC stopped playing avi files giving a bex error after installing this update which was listed as optional on windows update up until IE10 showed up I think. Still plays mp4 fine. I read where this platform update caused the problem, so I removed it and sure enough wmp 12 now plays avi again. Yet removing update thru windows update site also automatically removed ie10 so I guess it's no longer "optional".


Also I'm using catalyst 13.10 with HD5770 on physical machine. If I go into a vm with platform update and IE10 installed avi plays fine. So I guess the AMD, IE10, KB2670838 combo does not like WMP and WMC playing avi files heh. Hope this helps anyone with similar problem.

The current recommendation is to uninstall the update and hide it to prevent reinstallation until MS either patch it or change the detection logic.
They are aware of problems with some laptop chipsets and are working to fix it,

For Those That Want To Block IE 10

Look at the above. I removed all updates that were for IE 10. I was loosing Aero, My screen would go black and when it BSOD'd, I had enough and performed the above. I have not had a problem since.

I've read in other forums about Microsoft being aware of problems with some laptop chipsets and that they are working to fix it, but what about the rest of us? I have a desktop:

AMD Bulldozer FX-4 Quad Core 4170 Black Edition 4.20Ghz
Asus Sabertooth 990FX
Asus HD 6770 1024MB GDDR5 graphics card

When I install the Platform Update, both IE9 and Firefox 19.0 crash immediately when starting. The OP mentions that he has an HD5770, which is a desktop graphics card. Do Micrsoft think that it's just laptops that are having problems?

This problem is not limited to Laptops. I know many PC users that are having it as I did.

The problem (at least according to MS) is confined to a subset of chipsets where the graphics are onboard - and from what they have learned so far, all such chipsets are laptop ones.

If your experience is different please post details, and I'll try to ensure that the data is sent to MS for analysis.

A google search on "KB2670838" brings up several hits of people having desktop issues. I noticed quite of few have ATI cards.

Using catalyst 13.10 or 12.10 I get same results with the platform update installed as I described above in initial posting. If I remove catalyst and use windows update site offered vid drivers for HD5770 all is fine with platform update installed.

From what I hear, it's related to a combination of chipset and driver set - but I don't know any details.

When I install the Platform Update, both IE9 and Firefox 19.0 crash immediately when starting.

I discovered a workaround for Firefox on the Mozilla wibsite. If you start in safe mode and disable hardware acceleration then Firefox works fine. Interestingly enough, the same workaround works with IE9. If you go into Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab and at the top tick 'Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering' then IE9 works fine too.
